Nathaniel " Nat " Turner ( October 2, 1800 – November 11, 1831 ) was an American slave who led a slave rebellion in Virginia on August 21, 1831 that resulted in 60 white deaths and at least 100 black deaths, the largest number of fatalities to occur in one uprising prior to the American Civil War in the southern United States.

Deeply religious, Nat was often seen fasting, praying, or immersed in reading the stories of the Bible.

After Turner's execution, a local lawyer, Thomas Ruffin Gray, took it upon himself to publish " The Confessions of Nat Turner ", derived partly from research done while Turner was in hiding and partly from jailhouse conversations with Turner before trial.

Before the Nat Turner Revolt, there was a small but ineffectual antislavery movement in Virginia, largely on account of economic trends that made slavery less profitable in the Old South in the 1820s and fears among whites of the rising number of blacks, especially in the Tidewater and Piedmont regions.

A hat-trick in the 8 – 1 rout of Switzerland in June 1963 took Charlton's England goal tally to 30, equalling the record jointly held by Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse and Charlton's 31st goal against Wales in October the same year gave him the record alone.

Before the advent of rock and roll, concept albums had their original heyday in jazz of the early to mid ' 50s with artists such as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, the latter of whom would record numerous concept albums for Capitol throughout the last half of the ' 50s such as In the Wee Small Hours, Come Fly with Me, Where Are You?

Nat King Cole, a former jazz pianist who had had # 1 and # 2 hits on the pop charts in the early 1950s (" Mona Lisa " at # 2 in 1950 and " Too Young " at # 1 in 1951 ), had a record in the top 5 in the R & B charts in 1958, " Looking Back "/" Do I Like It ".

The 1950s roster now included Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Stan Kenton, Judy Garland, The Andrews Sisters, Jackie Gleason, Jane Froman, Wesley Tuttle, Ray Anthony, Andy Griffith, Shirley Bassey, Merle Travis, The Kingston Trio ( who in 1960 would account for 20 % of all record sales for Capitol ), Dean Martin, The Four Freshmen, Al Martino, Dinah Shore and Nancy Wilson ( actually signed in 1960 to Capitol ).

Playing what later came to be called " sweet " music rather than jazz, Duchin's success opened a new gate for similarly styled, piano-playing sweet bandleaders such as Henry King, Joe Reichman, Nat Brandwynne, Dick Gasparre, Little Jack Little, and particularly Carmen Cavallaro ( who acknowledged Duchin's influence ) to compete with the large jazz bands for radio time and record sales.
