Nicetas Choniates portrays an especially lively account of the sack and its aftermath.

She is compared with Penthesilea, mythical queen of the Amazons, by the Greek historian Nicetas Choniates ; he adds that she gained the epithet chrysopous ( golden-foot ) from the cloth of gold that decorated and fringed her robe.

Nicetas wrote a history of the Eastern Roman Empire from 1118 to 1207.

Akropolites ' historical work, the Annals, embraces the period from the capture of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade by the Latins in 1204 to its recovery by Michael Palaiologos in 1261, thus forming a continuation of the work of Nicetas Choniates.

There is an alternate narrative regarding the Holy Sponge, as it is said that in the 7th century, Nicetas, who took part in the conquest of Egypt from Phocas, and had been governor of Egypt, was famed for bringing the Holy Sponge and the Holy Lance ( the " Lance of Longinus ") to Constantinople from Palestine in 612 ; from 619 to 628 / 9 he appears to have been exarch of Africa.

The modern variant has concerned C. Moisil and N. Iorga, according to whom the actual name derives from Hirsu ) Romanian adaptation for Chrysos, about which we have information from the Byzantine chronist Nicetas Choniates ).

The Byzantine historian Nicetas Choniates compared Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, who took part in the Second Crusade, with Penthesilea.

His memorial to Alexios III Angelos on the abuses of Byzantine administration, the poetical lament over the degeneracy of Athens and the monodies on his brother Nicetas and Eustathius, archbishop of Thessalonica, deserve special mention.
