# Numbers 21: 8 – 9

* The sixth, Numbers 24: 21 – 22, concerns the destruction of the Kenites by Assyria

The Book of Numbers 21: 6 – 9 provides an origin for an archaic copper serpent, Nehushtan by associating it with Moses.

Book of Numbers 21: 9 " And Moses made a snake of copper, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a snake had bitten any man, when he beheld the snake of brass, he lived.

Its northern part was called Phasga ( or Pisgah ), and the highest peak of Phasga was Mount Nebo ( Numbers 23: 14 ; 27: 12 ; 21: 20 ; 32: 47 ; Deuteronomy 3: 27 ; 34: 1 ; 32: 49 ).

Some scholars identify it with Suphah ( Numbers 21: 14 ) as probably the name of a place.

Numbers 21: 35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors ( New International Version )

However they had to detour around the land of Edom ( Numbers 20: 21, 25 ).

In source criticism by Martin Noth, the " bronze serpent " passage in Numbers 21: 4-9, proceeds smoothly and is free of doublets, thus it does not appear to divide into different ' sources ' even with the unusual juxtaposition of ' God ' in v. 5.

The Serpent of bronze in Numbers 21 is a well known image for Christians because of its use by Jesus in the Gospel of John.

Some commentators have linked the symbol to the Nehushtan, a sacred object consisting of a serpent wrapped around a pole mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Numbers ( Numbers 21: 6-9 ).

The word sarap / seraphim appears three times in the Torah ( Numbers 21: 6-8, Deuteronomy 8: 15 ) and four times in the Book of Isaiah ( 6: 2-6, 14: 29, 30: 6 ).

The use of incense, candles, and other lights would seem to suggest the Jewish rites which accompanied the evening sacrifice ( Exodus 29: 39 ; Numbers 28: 4 ; Psalm 140: 2 ; Daniel 9: 21 ; 1 Chronicles 23: 30 ; cf.

" And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any person, when he beheld the serpent of brass, they lived "( Numbers 21: 9 ).

Elizabeth Anderson criticizes commands God gave to men in the Old Testament, such as: kill adulterers, homosexuals, and " people who work on the Sabbath " ( Leviticus 20: 10 ; Leviticus 20: 13 ; Exodus 35: 2, respectively ); to commit ethnic cleansing ( Exodus 34: 11-14, Leviticus 26: 7-9 ); commit genocide ( Numbers 21: 2-3, Numbers 21: 33 – 35, Deuteronomy 2: 26 – 35, and Joshua 1 – 12 ); and other mass killings.

The ancient Hebrews perceived that there were poetical portions in their sacred texts, as shown by their entitling as songs or chants passages such as Exodus 15: 1-19 and Numbers 21: 17-20 ; a song or chant ( shir ) is, according to the primary meaning of the term, poetry.

The poem may have been included in the Book of the Wars of the Lord mentioned in Numbers 21: 14.

It is symbolic of the bronze serpent created by Moses in the wilderness ( Numbers 21: 4 – 9 ) and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified ( John 3: 14 ).

# Ma ' aserot ( מעשרות, Tithes ) or Ma ' aser Rishon ( מעשר ראשון, First Tithe ) deals with the rules regarding the tithe to be given to the Levites ( Numbers 18: 21 – 24 ).

At the end of Numbers ( Numbers 26 – 35 ) Israel moves from Kadesh to the plains of Moab opposite Jericho, ready to enter the Promised Land.

115b ) states that a peculiar section in the Book of Numbers ( 10: 35 — 36, surrounded by inverted Hebrew letter nuns ) in fact forms a separate book.

Instead, the Tahash animal ( Exodus 25, 26, 35, 36 and 39 ; Numbers 4 ; and Ezekiel 16: 10 ) was thought to be a kosher unicorn with a coat of many colors that only existed in biblical times.

The duo once again generated some controversy when their second single from the album, " Numbers ", was banned by the BBC due to references in the song to the drug speed, something that they had missed in the earlier single " Bedsitter ".....
