With the introduction of the ESA / 390 architecture, AIX / 370 was replaced by AIX / ESA in 1991, which was based on OSF / 1, and also ran on the System / 390 platform.

** LVM ( Logical Volume Manager ) was incorporated into OSF / 1, and in 1995 for HP-UX, and the Linux LVM implementation is similar to the HP-UX LVM implementation.

Operating systems that supported Alpha included OpenVMS ( previously known as OpenVMS AXP ), Tru64 UNIX ( previously known as DEC OSF / 1 AXP and Digital UNIX ), Windows NT ( until 4. 0 SP6 and Windows 2000 RC1 ), GNU / Linux ( Debian GNU / Linux, Gentoo Linux and Red Hat Linux ), BSD UNIX ( NetBSD, OpenBSD and FreeBSD up to 6. x ), as well as the L4Ka :: Pistachio kernel.

Other Unix-like systems working on the Mach microkernel include OSF / 1, Lites, and MkLinux.

The KSR systems ran a specially customized version of the OSF / 1 operating system, a Unix variant, with programs compiled by a KSR-specific port of the Greenhills C and FORTRAN compilers.

Mach received a major boost in visibility when the Open Software Foundation ( OSF ) announced they would be hosting future versions of OSF / 1 on Mach 2. 5, and were investigating Mach 3 as well.

Several operating systems have since been constructed using this method, known as co-location, among them Lites, MkLinux, OSF / 1 and NeXTSTEP / OPENSTEP / Mac OS X.

Unix International ( UI ) merged into Open Software Foundation ( OSF ) in 1994 only to merge with X / Open to form The Open Group in 1996.

Previously, Tru64 UNIX was a product of Compaq, and before that, Digital Equipment Corporation ( DEC ), where it was known as Digital UNIX ( formerly DEC OSF / 1 AXP ).

As its original name suggests, Tru64 UNIX is based on the OSF / 1 operating system.

Dubbed OSF / 1, the aim was to compete with System V Release 4 from AT & T and Sun Microsystems, and it has been argued that a primary goal was for the operating system to be free of AT & T intellectual property.

The fact that OSF / 1 was one of the first operating systems to use the Mach kernel is cited as support of this assertion.

Digital also strongly promoted OSF / 1 for real-time applications, and with traditional UNIX implementations at the time providing poor real-time support at best, the real-time and multi-threading support was heavily dependent on the Mach kernel.

OSF / 1 was envisaged to be the third major branch of the Unix family tree, after System V and BSD.

DEC's original release of OSF / 1 ( OSF / 1 Release 1. 0 ) was in January 1992 for their line of MIPS-based DECstation workstations, however this was never a fully supported product and was cancelled before the end of the year.

DEC ported OSF / 1 to their new Alpha AXP platform ( as DEC OSF / 1 AXP ), and this was the first version ( Release 1. 2 ) of what is most commonly referred to as OSF / 1.

DEC OSF / 1 AXP Release 1. 2 was shipped on March 1993.

OSF / 1 AXP was a full 64-bit operating system and the native UNIX implementation for the Alpha architecture.

From OSF / 1 AXP V2. 0 onwards, UNIX System V compatibility was also integrated into the system.

Apple Computer intended to base A / UX 4. 0 for their PowerPC-based Macintoshes on OSF / 1, but the project was cancelled.

OSF / 1 AD ( Advanced Development ) was a distributed version of OSF / 1 developed for massively parallel supercomputers by Locus Computing Corporation.

HP also released a port of OSF / 1 to the early HP 9000 / 700 workstations based on the PA-RISC 1. 1 architecture.

Other software vendors also licensed OSF / 1 including Apple.

At a point, most of the Alpha OSF / 1 kernel could be built with TenDRA C and afterwards there was also a similar effort to port the FreeBSD kernel.

The plan also called for a parking building, a remodeled administration building and box office, a scene shop and exhibit hall that later would become the OSF Black Swan Theatre, landscaping, and street realignment.

The SRM console was initially designed to boot DEC's OSF / 1 AXP ( later called Digital UNIX and finally Tru64 UNIX ) and OpenVMS operating systems, although various other operating systems ( such as Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD, for example ) were also written to boot from the SRM console.

Apple never ported A / UX to PowerPC Macintoshes ( though A / UX 4. 0 was rumored to have been an OSF / 1 adaptation ), and the company all but abandoned it by 1996, preferring to use a slightly modified version of IBM ’ s AIX system on their mid-90s Apple Network Servers.

MkLinux started as a project sponsored by Apple Computer and OSF Research Institute, to get " Linux on Mach " ported to the Macintosh computer and for Apple to explore alternative kernel technologies on the Mac platform.

In the early 1990s, several Unix R & D systems were ported to the PA-RISC platform, including several attempts of OSF / 1, various Mach ports and systems that combined parts of Mach with other systems ( MkLinux, Mach 4 / Lites ).

A universally unique identifier ( UUID ) is an identifier standard used in software construction, standardized by the Open Software Foundation ( OSF ) as part of the Distributed Computing Environment ( DCE ).

Other technologies developed by OSF include Motif and Distributed Computing Environment ( DCE ), respectively a widget toolkit and package of distributed network computing technologies.

Technologies which were produced primarily by OSF included ODE, the Open Development Environment-a flexible development, build and source control environment ; TET, the Test Environment Toolkit-an open framework for building and executing automated test cases ; and the operating system OSF / 1 MK from the OSF Research Institute based on the Mach3. 0 microkernel.

All the OSF technologies had corresponding manuals and supporting publications produced almost exclusively by the staff at OSF and published by Prentice-Hall.
