Beginning in 1910, with the publication of " The Oedipus-Complex as An Explanation of Hamlet's Mystery: Study in Motive ," Ernest Jones — a psychoanalyst and Freud's biographer — developed Freud's ideas into a series of essays that culminated in his book Hamlet and Oedipus ( 1949 ).

In the same 1960 work, Oedipus and Akhnaton, Velikovsky not only saw Akhenaten as the origin of Oedipus, but also identified him with a Pharaoh mentioned only in Herodotus, " Anysis of the city of the same name " — Akhenaten of Akhetaten.

Its formation takes place during the dissolution of the Oedipus complex and is formed by an identification with and internalisation of the father figure after the little boy cannot successfully hold the mother as a love-object out of fear of castration.

A tragic hero in Greek mythology, Oedipus fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thereby brought disaster on his city and family.
