In the summer of 1802, when Oehlenschläger had an old Scandinavian romance, as well as a volume of lyrics, in the press, the young Norse philosopher, Henrik Steffens, came back to Copenhagen after a long visit to Schelling in Germany, full of new romantic ideas.

At night he had dinner with his friends Adam Oehlenschläger and H. C. Andersen, and he is said to have referred to the finished museum saying: " Now I can die whenever it is time, because Bindesbøll has finished my tomb.

When in 1800 the University of Copenhagen had made the debate the subject of a competition, the Danish Romantic Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger expressed himself in favor of Norse mythology.

Kuhlau had his breakthrough in 1814 at the Royal Danish Theatre with Røverborgen (" The Robbers ’ Castle "), a singspiel with a liberetto by Adam Oehlenschläger.

Haakon Jarl's life also received literary treatment by Danish poet Adam Oehlenschläger, in his tragedy Hakon Jarl, written in six weeks in 1805 during a stay in Halle, after reading Snorri's Heimskringla.

In 1822 he published his drama Nina and was made professor of the Danish language at the University of Kiel, where he delivered a course of lectures, comparing the Scandinavian mythology as found in the Edda with the poems of Oehlenschläger.

In Denmark, romantic nationalism led writers isuch as Johannes Ewald, Nicolai Grundtvig ( whose translation of Beowulf into Danish was the first into a modern language ) and Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger to take a renewed interest in Old Norse subjects.

Aladdin was written to accompany a production of Adam Oehlenschläger ’ s fairy tale at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.

Until 1820 he resided in Copenhagen, in almost unceasing literary feud with some one or other, abusing and being abused ; the most important feature of the whole being Baggesen's determination not to allow Oehlenschläger to be considered a greater poet than himself.

Steffens and Oehlenschläger met one day at Dreier's Club, and after a conversation of sixteen hours the latter went home, suppressed his two coming volumes, and wrote at a sitting his splendid poem Guldhornene, in a manner totally new to Danish literature.

His lectures and the early poetry of Adam Oehlenschläger opened Grundtvig's eyes to the new era in literature.

He was doomed, however, to disturbance in his studies, first from the death of his mother, next from his inveterate tendency towards poetry, and finally from the First Battle of Copenhagen in April 1801, which, however, inspired a dramatic sketch ( April the Second 1801 ) which is the first thing of the kind by Oehlenschläger that we possess.

Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger ( 14 November 1779 – 20 January 1850 ) was a Danish poet and playwright.

Oehlenschläger was confirmed in 1795, and was to have been apprenticed to a tradesman in Copenhagen.

At the age of twenty-six, Oehlenschläger was universally recognized, even by the opponents of the romantic revival, as the leading poet of Denmark.

Ingemann was in his elder years much respected and after the death of Oehlenschläger he was regarded the unofficial poet-king of Denmark.

His mother was Marie Louise Oehlenschläger ( 1818 – 1910 ), daughter of Adam Oehlenschläger.

This romantic paraphrase of an ancient saga was composed in twenty-four cantos, all differing in verse form, modeled somewhat, on an earlier Danish masterpiece, Helge of Oehlenschläger.

Examples include " Gastmahl in Walhalla ( mit einziehenden Einheriern )" ( 1880, charcoal drawing ) by K. Ehrenberg, and the poem " Einheriarne " ( published in Nordens Guder, 1819 ) by A. Oehlenschläger, and " Braga " ( 1771 ) by Klopstock.

Fenrir appears in modern literature in the poem " Om Fenrisulven og Tyr " ( 1819 ) by Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger ( collected in Nordens Guder ), the novel Der Fenriswolf by K. H. Strobl, and Til kamp mod dødbideriet ( 1974 ) by E. K. Reich and E. Larsen.

He often used a historical background for his plays-among his influences were William Shakespeare, Adam Oehlenschläger, Henrik Ibsen, and George Bernard Shaw.

At the age of nine, Oehlenschläger began to make fluent verses.

Storm himself taught the class of Scandinavian mythology, and thus Oehlenschläger received his earliest bias towards the poetical religion of his ancestors.

In the spring of 1809 Oehlenschläger went to Rome to visit Bertel Thorvaldsen, and in his house wrote his tragedy of Correggio.

With the exception of Ludvig Holberg, no Danish writer before 1870 has exercised so wide an influence as Oehlenschläger.
