The Negro composer Hall Johnson studied the American-Negro Suite and said of it, `` Of all the many songs written by white composers and employing what claims to be a Negroid idiom in both words and music, these six songs by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler easily stand far out above the rest.

Since rococo music tends to be pretty and elegant above all, it can seem rather vacuous to twentieth-century ears that have grown accustomed to the stress and dissonances of composers from Beethoven to Boulez.

Their letters suggest that both Mozart and his father, being Austrians who resented the special place that Italian composers had in the courts of the Austrian princes, blamed the Italians in general and Salieri in particular for all of Mozart's difficulties in establishing himself in Vienna.

Marenzio came closest to unifying all the different stylistic currents of the time, writing madrigals which attempted to capture every nuance of emotion in the poems using every musical means then available.

Cornelis Verdonck, Hubert Waelrant, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck all composed madrigals in Italian.

Germany was the home of several prolific composers of madrigals, including Lassus ( in Munich ) and Philippe de Monte ( Vienna ), the most prolific madrigal composer of all.

Marenzio produced seventeen books of madrigals between 1580 and 1589, all of which show the most expressive, varied and important works in madrigal literature.

In all of his madrigals Marenzio shows the closest relationship of text and music by using Imitative counterpoint, chordal texture and recitatives.

In addition to the madrigals, Ferrabosco wrote sacred music, including motets, lamentations, and several anthems, all in a cappella vocal style.

Morley obviously found his compositional direction at this time, and shortly afterwards began publishing his own collections of madrigals ( 11 in all ).

While not as comprehensive as Marenzio, who after all wrote more than 500 madrigals, Nanino's examples of the genre vary from the highly serious, angular and contrapuntal, to the lightest canzonette ; in expressive intensity he is sometimes compared to Marenzio.

His consort music is all sombre in tone, contrasting with the often gleeful madrigals.

His surviving works include ten fantasies, seven madrigals, eight chansons, and fourteen motets — all in amazingly faithful polyphonic arrangements for lute alone.

In 1570, 1583 and 1586 she published other books of madrigals, all at Venice.

Pari's only surviving music are three books of madrigals, all published in Palermo between 1611 and 1619.

All of the compositions in the codex are secular songs in Italian: ballata, madrigals, and cacce: there are 353 in all, and they can be dated to the period from 1340 to 1415.
