Operation Saturn, revised as Operation Little Saturn, was a Red Army operation on the Eastern Front of World War II that led to battles in the northern Caucasus and Donets Basin regions of the Soviet Union from December 1942 to February 1943.

Later Joseph Stalin reduced his ambitious plans-due to his initial huge losses attacking the Axis troops-to a relatively small campaign codenamed " Operation Little Saturn ".

After the defeat of the Romanian Army around Stalingrad and the successful encirclement of the German Sixth Army ( defeating even the German " Operation Winter Storm " attempt to relieve the siege ), Stalin started a counter-offensive nicknamed " Operation Little Saturn " in order to enlarge the area controlled by the Soviet Army in eastern Ukraine until Kharkov and Rostov.

While General Rodion Malinovsky's Soviet 2nd Guards Army blocked the German advance on Stalingrad, the modified plan Operation Little Saturn was launched on 16 December.

After the German relief operation was held, the 1st Guards Army, along with the 6th Army and Soviet Third Guards Army, launched an attack in Operation Little Saturn.

The Stavka developed two major operations to be conducted against Axis forces near Stalingrad, Uranus and Saturn, and also planned for Operation Mars designed to engage German Army Group Center in an effort to distract reinforcements and to inflict as much damage as possible.

Meanwhile, the Red Army continued to allocate as many resources as possible to the eventual launch of the planned Operation Saturn, which aimed to isolate Army Group A from the rest of the German Army.

Planning for Operation Saturn began on 25 November, aiming for the destruction of the Italian 8th Army and the severing of communications between German forces West of the Don River and forces operating in the Caucasus.

Stavka postponed Operation Saturn until 16 December, as Soviet forces struggled to clear German defenders from the lower Chir River.

Concurrently, the Red Army began building its strength for Operation Saturn, in which it would aim to isolate and destroy German Army Group A in the Caucasus.

The Fourth Panzer Army's offensive forced Stavka to recalculate its intentions for Operation Saturn, and on 13 December Stalin and Stavka authorized the redeployment of the 2nd Guards Army from the Don Front to the Stalingrad Front, where it would be ready to be used against German forces on 15 December.

This would later unfold and grow as Stavka planned and conducted Operation Mars, Operation Uranus and Operation Saturn.
