This led to a CIA-orchestrated coup in 1954, known as Operation PBSUCCESS, which saw Arbenz toppled and forced into exile by Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas.

Dwight D. Eisenhower authorizes Operation PBSUCCESS, a program of " psychological warfare and political action " and " subversion ," that succeeds in removing the government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán with the help of Guatemalan military general Carlos Castillo Armas.

He also played a major role in the Central Intelligence Agency operation to overthrow the democratic Mossadegh government of Iran in 1953 ( Operation Ajax ) and the democratic Arbenz government of Guatemala in 1954 ( Operation PBSUCCESS ).

In that same year, due to his relationship with his brother Allen Dulles, the Director of CIA and a former member of the Board Of Directors of the United Fruit Company, based in Guatemala, Foster Dulles was pivotal in promoting and executing the CIA-led Operation PBSUCCESS that overthrew the democratically elected Guatemalan government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán.

Assigned by the Eisenhower administration, this military opposition was armed, trained and organized by the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency ( see Operation PBSUCCESS ).

The Eisenhower Administration ordered the CIA to effect Operation PBSUCCESS, the coup d ' état to depose the Árbenz Government of Guatemala.

In Mexico, Hunt helped devise Operation PBSUCCESS, the successful covert plan to overthrow Jacobo Arbenz, the elected president of Guatemala.

Agrarian reform met with the second officially orchestrated clandestine CIA-instigated coup d ' etat chartered as Operation PBFORTUNE and Operation PBSUCCESS, championed by US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, whose brother Allen, the Director of Central Intelligence, was a primary stakeholder in the United Fruit Company, which owned significant portions of the rural land subject to agrarian reforms.

The 1954 Guatemalan coup d ’ état ( 18 – 27 June 1954 ) was the CIA covert operation that deposed President Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán ( 1950 – 54 ), with Operation PBSUCCESS — paramilitary invasion by an anti-Communist “ army of liberation ”.

Nonetheless, two years later, in June 1954, Operation PBSUCCESS realised the anti – Árbenz coup d ’ état, and installed Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas as President of Guatemala.

" With Eisenhower's leadership and Dulles ' direction, CIA activities increased, to resist the spread of communism in poorer countries ; the CIA in part deposed the leaders of Iran in Operation Ajax, of Guatemala through Operation Pbsuccess, and possibly the newly independent Republic of the Congo ( Léopoldville ).

Ribbentrop also worked closely with the SS for what turned out to be his last significant foreign-policy move: Operation Panzerfaust, the coup that deposed Admiral Horthy on 15 October 1944.

Two years later, the Persian nationalisation of the petroleum of Iran was halted with Operation Ajax, a British – American coup d ’ état, which deposed P. M. Mossadeq on 19 August 1953, and reinstated the deposed, absolute monarchy of the Pahlavi family.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, several American intelligence agencies accused Belarus of providing a safe haven for the deposed leader, Saddam Hussein and his sons Uday and Qusay.

The combination of President Árbenz Guzmán ’ s political toleration of the Guatemalan Party of Labour ( PGT ) and other leftist politicians, prompted the CIA to prepare the contingency plan Operation PBFORTUNE in 1951, for overthrowing his liberal government, when the CIA could definitively determine that he and his regime were a Communist threat to the Western Hemisphere.

On 19 February 1954, the CIA began Operation WASHTUB, the planting of a false Soviet arms-cache in Nicaragua, to publicly demonstrate Guatemalan Government ties to the Soviet Union.

After the 1954 Guatemalan coup d ' état, CIA case officer Frank Wisner organised Operation PBHistory, meant to find and secure Árbenz government documents that might prove that the Soviet Union controlled Guatemala ; and, in so doing, PBHistory meant to provide usable intelligence regarding other Soviet connections and Communist personnel in Latin America.

The Guatemalan coup d ’ état began with Operation PBFORTUNE ( September 1952 ), the partly implemented plan to supply exiled, right-wing, anti – Árbenz rebel groups with operational funds and matériel, to form a counter-revolutionary army of liberation to depose the Árbenz Government.

The Guatemalan paramilitary invasion was contingent upon the confirmation, by the secret intelligence agencies of the US, that President Árbenz was a Communist ; lack of proof cancelled Operation PBFORTUNE.

Afterwards followed Operation PBHISTORY ( July 1954 ), with the intelligence-gathering remit to find and publish documentary evidence — from the Árbenz Government and from the national Communists of the Guatemalan Labour Party — that would confirm the geopolitical opinion of the CIA: under the Árbenz Government, Guatemala was a pro – Communist puppet state of the USSR, and part of the Soviet hegemony in the Western Hemisphere.

In the event, the CIA document-analysis team of Operation PBHISTORY failed, because they found no government or communist documents that supported the mistaken, ideologic assumption, by the US, that the Árbenz Government had been infiltrated by Guatemalan Communists controlled from the Soviet Union.

The paramilitary invasion of Operation PBSUCCESS ( 1953 – 54 ) featured El ejército de liberación, an army of liberation recruited, trained, and armed by the CIA, composed of 480 mercenary soldiers under the command of Col. Carlos Castillo Armas, an exiled, right-wing Guatemalan army officer.

In 1951, the initial plan to overthrow President Árbenz ' liberal government, Operation PBFORTUNE, was prepared before the expropriation of the Guatemalan farmlands of the United Fruit Company, because, ideologically:

Operation PBFORTUNE: President Harry Truman authorized the CIA to effect a Guatemalan coup d ’ état in 1951.

To initiate Operation PBSUCCESS, the CIA selected the Guatemalan politico-military leader who would succeed Árbenz as President of Guatemala, and establish a pro – American Guatemalan government.

As the most politically amenable white-horse caudillo, the CIA appointed Col. Castillo as leader of the Guatemalan army of liberation, the core of Operation PBSUCCESS.

On 24 May 1954, the US Navy launched Operation HARDROCK BAKER, a blockade of Guatemala, wherein submarines and surface ships intercepted and boarded every ship in Guatemalan waters, and forcefully searched it for Guatemala-bound weapons that might support the “ Communist Árbenz Government ”.

After the PBSUCCESS coup d ’ état the CIA launched Operation PBHISTORY, a document analysis team in Guatemala with the intelligence remit to collect and analyze Árbenz Government and Guatemalan Labour Party documents that would be evidence to support the CIA's ideological and geopolitical belief that, under Árbenz's presidency, the Republic of Guatemala was a Western-hemisphere Communist puppet state in the hegemony of the Soviet Union.
