The Oromo people are the largest ethnic grouping in Ethiopia, which has a total of 74 ethnically diverse language groups.

Sung in Amharic, manzuma has spread to Harar and Jimma, where it is now sung in the Oromo language.

With the creation of " Oromia " under the new system of ethnic regions, it has been possible to introduce Oromo as the medium of instruction in elementary schools throughout the region ( including areas where other ethnic groups live speaking their languages ) and as a language of administration within the region.

Within Kenya there has been radio broadcasting in Oromo ( in the Borana dialect ) on the Voice of Kenya since at least the 1980s.

Like most other Ethiopian languages, whether Semitic, Cushitic, or Omotic, Oromo has a set of ejective consonants, that is, voiceless stops or affricates that are accompanied by glottalization and an explosive burst of air.

Oromo has the typical Eastern Cushitic set of five short and five long vowels, indicated in the orthography by doubling the five vowel letters.

The ethnic name has been changed to Oromo as the name Gala is considered offensive.

Robert Hetzron has suggested that the Rift languages ( South Cushitic ) are a part of Lowland East Cushitic, and Kießling & Mous ( 2003 ) have suggested more specifically that they be linked to a Southern Lowland branch, together with Oromo, Somali, and Yaaku – Dullay.

Comfort Momoh, a specialist midwife in England, writes that in Ethiopia the Falashas perform it when the child is a few days old, the Amhara on the eighth day of birth, while the Adere and Oromo choose between four years and puberty.

With 30 million members, they constitute the single largest ethnicity in Ethiopia and approximately 34. 49 % of the population according to the 2007 census .< ref name =" census2007p66 "> Their native language is Oromo ( also called Afaan Oromoo and Oromiffa ), which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.

While further research is needed to precisely comprehend their origins, the Oromo are believed to have originally adhered to a pastoralist / nomadic and / or semi-agriculturalist lifestyle.

In the general view of Oromo people's role in Ethiopia, Ras Gobana Dacche is a famous Oromo figure who led the development of modern Ethiopia and the political and miliatary incorporation of more territories into Ethiopian borders.

Bareentu / Bareento or ( older ) Bareentuma is one of the two moieties of the Oromo people.

The Oromo were formerly called Galla by non-Oromo Ethiopians, and one may encounter this name in older texts, but it is considered a pejorative term.

In some languages, assonance, the repetition of a vowel, is also exploited in forming artistic proverbs, such as the following extreme example from Oromo, of Ethiopia.

It is also known as jimma in the Oromo language.

Tigrinya is the third most spoken language in Ethiopia, after Amharic and Oromo, and by far the most spoken in Eritrea ( see Demographics of Eritrea ).

It is a major crop, although often supplemented with cereal crops, amongst the following people indigenous to southern Ethiopia: the Aari, Basketo, Dime, Dizi, Gamo, Gedeo, Gimira, Goffa, Gurage, Hadiya, Kafficho, Kambaata, Konta, Kullo, Maji, Mao, some Oromo groups, Sheko, Sidama, Welayta, Yem, Uba and the Zala.

It is a sociolinguistic language, consisting of four varieties: Borana – Arsi – Guji Oromo, Eastern Oromo ( also called Qottu ), Orma, and West Central Oromo.

Within Ethiopia, Oromo is the second most spoken widely spoken language.

Within Africa, Oromo is the language with the fourth most speakers, after Arabic ( if one counts the mutually unintelligible spoken forms of Arabic as a single language and assumes the same for the varieties of Oromo ), Swahili, and Hausa.

Oromo is written with a Latin alphabet called Qubee which was formally adopted in 1991.

Forms of Oromo are spoken as a first language by more than 25 million Oromo and neighbouring peoples in Ethiopia and parts of northern Kenya.

With the adoption of Qubee, it is believed more texts were written in the Oromo language between 1991 and 1997 than in the previous 100 years.

Lij Iyasu left the capital after little more than a month, and during this time engaged in a raid upon the Afar, who had reportedly massacred 300 of the Karayu Oromo at the village of Sadimalka on the Awash River.

The previous indigenous Turkana name for Lake Turkana was Anam a Cheper. The area still sees few visitors, being a two-day drive from Nairobi. The lake is also an imaginary boundary of the Rendille and Borana and Oromo to the Turkana land. The area is primarily clay based and there is more alkaline in the sea water.

His funeral was attended by thousands of Oromos in Ambo ; police arrested more than 37 people, stating that they were supporters of the Oromo Liberation Front ( OLF ) on 3 September.

The last military action of the Oromo Liberation Front ( OLF ) before the demise of the Derg 1991 occurred at Dembidolo, when some of its units reportedly killed more than 700 government soldiers.

By the 17th century, Ethiopia lost all contact with this state, and the history of this state is " largely a blank " for most of this century, although under the increasing pressure of the Oromo migrating into the Gibe region forced " the Bosa kingdom must have continued its gradual contraction until little more than a relatively small area isolated in the highland forests of May Gudo was left at the end of the century.

Common names include teff, lovegrass, annual bunch grass ( English ); Ṭeff / Ṭéff ( Amharic, both representing the same sound, an ejective consonant ); Ṭaffi / xaffi ( Oromo, both representing the same sound ); Ṭaff ( Tigrinya ); and mil éthiopien ( French-' Ethiopian millet ').

During the Zemene Mesafint or " Age of Princes " of Ethiopia, Emperors became figureheads, controlled by warlords like Ras Mikael Sehul of Tigray, and by the Oromo Yejju dynasty, which later led to 17th century Oromo rule of Gondar, changing the language of the court from Amharic to Afaan Oromo.

Oromo language singers like Kabaa Fidoo, Abbabaa Tamesgeen, Iyoob Yaadataa, Baacaa Bayyanaa, Magarsaa Baqqalaa, Dastaa Insarmuu, Bilisee Karrasaa and others have also served Evangelical Churches in southwestern Ethiopia.

However, the Gadaa had all the shortcoming and problems like that of the monarchial Oromo and monarchial non-Oromo Ethiopian systems of governance.

According to ethnohistorian Ulrich Braukämper, minorities and those who assimilated, like the Hadiyya, were " considered to be of a lower social status than the ' pure ' Oromo and did not possess equal rights in the Gadaa system.
