The Diggers took their name from the original English Diggers ( 1649 – 50 ) led by Gerrard Winstanley, and they sought to create a mini-society free of money and capitalism.

A major early work on this group is F. DuCane Godman's Monograph of the Petrels, five fascicles, 1907 — 1910., with portraits of figures by John Gerrard Keulemans.

He also became an active member of the London socialist movement, associating with other leftists at the 1917 Club in Gerrard Street, Soho, which was also frequented by such notables as Ramsay MacDonald, Aldous Huxley, H. G.

At the same time that John Lilburne began his campaign, another group led by Gerrard Winstanley styling themselves True Levellers ( and became known as Diggers ), advocated equality in property as well as political rights.
