At that time, the ENIAC was considered to be the first computer in the modern sense, but in 1973 a U. S. District Court invalidated the ENIAC patent and concluded that the ENIAC inventors had derived the subject matter of the electronic digital computer from Atanasoff ( see Patent dispute ).

Though there may have been earlier attempts to pull cars by endless ropes, the first cable car installation in operation was the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway in New York City, which ran from 1 July 1868 to 1870.

Although the non-trademarkability of the term Loglan was eventually upheld by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, many supporters and members of The Loglan Institute find this usage offensive, and reserve Loglan for the TLI version of the language.

He announced his invention of the first phonograph, a device for recording and replaying sound, on November 21, 1877 ( early reports appear in Scientific American and several newspapers in the beginning of November, and an even earlier announcement of Edison working on a ' talking-machine ' can be found in the Chicago Daily Tribune on May 9 ), and he demonstrated the device for the first time on November 29 ( it was patented on February 19, 1878 as US Patent 200, 521 ).

Tainter was granted Patent No. 385886 for it on July 10, 1888.

Van C. Smith was the son of Roswell Smith, a prominent lawyer in Lafayette, Indiana, and Annie Ellsworth, daughter of U. S. Patent Commissioner Henry Leavitt Ellsworth.

In 1863 that part of New South Wales to the north of South Australia was annexed to South Australia by Letters Patent as the Northern Territory of South Australia, which became shortened to the Northern Territory ( 6 July 1863 ).

While the patent was initially rejected by the patent office as being a purely mathematical invention, following 12 years of appeals, Pardo and Landau won a landmark court case at the CCPA ( Predecessor Court of the Federal Circuit ) overturning the Patent Office in 1983 — establishing that " something does not cease to become patentable merely because the point of novelty is in an algorithm.

Patent medicines originated in England, where a patent was granted to Richard Stoughton's Elixir in 1712.

The world's first patent for an underwater echo ranging device was filed at the British Patent Office by English meteorologist Lewis Richardson a month after the sinking of the Titanic, and a German physicist Alexander Behm obtained a patent for an echo sounder in 1913.

Staind was unsuccessful in their suit prompting Stainbrook to pursue litigation against the band for including false statements in their application with the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office.

About 30 years later American engineer and inventor Laurens Hammond filed U. S. Patent 1, 956, 350 for a new type of " electrical musical instrument " that could recreate a pipe organ-type sound.

Patent royalties to the MPPC ended in September 1913 with the expiration of the last of the patents filed in the mid-1890s at the dawn of commercial film production and exhibition.

In 2009, Mike Richard John Smith filed a Canadian Patent application ( Canadian Patent number: 2675044 ) indicating the screw type propeller is inefficient due to the screw type blade orientation of the propeller which when in operation for forward movement substantially moves the fluid ( for a boat the fluid is water ) sidewardly, rotationally, and rearwardly wherein moving the fluid sidewardly does not move the boat forward, thus contibuting to the inefficiency of the screw type propeller.

A request for reviewing the WARF patents 5, 843, 780 ; 6, 200, 806 ; 7, 029, 913 US Patent and Trademark Office were filed by non-profit patent-watchdogs The Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights, and the Public Patent Foundation as well as molecular biologist Jeanne Loring of the Burnham Institute.

In October, Edison filed a preliminary claim, known as a caveat, with the U. S. Patent Office outlining his plans for the device.
