Paul Mares of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings insisted that Beiderbecke's chief influence was the New Orleans cornetist Emmett Hardy, who died in 1925 at the age of 23.

He credited Buddy Bolden as an early influence, and in turn was a major influence on numerous younger musicians in New Orleans and Chicago, including Tommy Ladnier, Paul Mares, Muggsy Spanier, Louis Panico, Johnny Wiggs, and Louis Armstrong.

Albert “ Abbie ” Brunies and his younger brother and trombonist George Brunies were initially hesitant but suggested the idea to friend, trumpet player Paul Mares, who immediately lunged for the opportunity.

George Brunies picked up his trombone and set off to join Mares in Chicago, playing gigs and going to afterhours clubs with Paul Mares.

Within several months of Palmer ’ s group breaking up, Roppolo found himself playing on riverboats in Chicago with Elmer Schoebel, Jack Pettis, Frank Snyder, George Brunies, banjoist Louis Black and ( possibly ) Paul Mares.

They all went their separate ways: Paul Mares continued to play music, releasing a record in 1935 and ran the “ P & M New Orleans Barbeque ” with his wife in the late 1930s Leon Roppolo was ( and always had been ) mentally unstable and spent the last years of his life in and out of institutions until his early death in 1945, though he managed to keep playing music as best he could.

Paul Mares scheduled another two-day recording session at Gennett later but the band had recently dissolved somewhat, deciding to all move in different directions following their stint at the Friars Inn.

Paul Mares ( June 15, 1900 – August 18, 1949 ), was an American early dixieland jazz cornet & trumpet player, and leader of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings.

In January 1935 Mares played trumpet on, and fronted, a recording session with a band called " Paul Mares and his Friars Society Orchestra "-a name that referred to the Friar's Inn club where the N. O. R. K.

Paul Mares died at the age of 49 of lung cancer, according to his brother Joe, caused by " smoking too many cigarettes ".

Roppolo soon excelled at the clarinet, and played youthful jobs with his friends Paul Mares and George Brunies for parades, parties, and at Milneburg on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

After the breakup of the Rhythm Kings in Chicago, Roppolo and Paul Mares headed east to try their luck on the New York City jazz scene.
