Pentecostals appeal to the declaration of the Apostle Peter at Pentecost, that " the gift of the Holy Spirit " was " for you and for your children and for all who are far off " ( Acts 2: 38-39 ).

After Jesus ascends (), on the feast of Pentecost or Shavuot ( the 50th day from Firstfruits and thus usually calculated as the first day of the week ), the Spirit of God is given to the disciples, who baptize 3, 000 people into the apostolic fellowship.

In the 1950s, David Attenborough and a BBC film crew brought back footage of the " land divers " ( Sa: ) of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, young men who jumped from tall wooden platforms with vines tied to their ankles as a test of their courage and passage into manhood.

In the summer of 1907, Cashwell brought the message of Pentecost to evangelists H. G. Rodgers and M. M. Pinson, who carried the message to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi.

He also observes in “ For the Sixth Day ( Friday ) in the Third Week of Lent ” and in “ For the First Sunday After Pentecost ”: " And we ought to worship with true humility if we want our heavenly God to hear us because God is the one who lives in a high place and yet has regard for the deep down humble, and God is always near to those who sincerely call to him in their trouble.

And in the " Fifth Sunday After Pentecost ” he reminds us: " Bosses who cannot permit those working under them to know kindness during this life of labour should never themselves enjoy lives of luxury because they could easily be kind to their workers every day.

Saint Basil the Great († 379 ), a saint of undivided Christianity, writes in his Third Kneeling Prayer at Pentecost O Christ our God ...( who ) on this all-perfect and saving Feast, art graciously pleased to accept propitiatory prayers for those who are imprisoned in hades, promising unto us who are held in bondage great hope of release from the vilenes that doth hinder us and did hinder them ... send down Thy consolation ... and establish their souls in the mansions of the Just ; and graciously vouchsafe unto them peace and pardon ; for not the dead shall praise thee, O Lord, neither shall they who are in Hell make bold to offer unto thee confession.

The most represented artist included in the church is Titian, who painted St. Mark Enthroned with Saints Cosmas, Damian, Sebastian and Roch, the altarpiece of the sacristy, as well as ceiling paintings of David and Goliath, Abraham and Isaac and Cain and Abel, and eight tondi of the Doctors of the Church and the Evangelists, all in the great sacristy, and Pentecost in the nave.

These symbolize the renewal of life, the coming of the warmth of summer, and the growth of the church at and from the first Pentecost.

Trumpeters or brass ensembles are often specially contracted to accompany singing and provide special music at Pentecost services, recalling the Sound of the mighty wind.

Ordinations are celebrated across a wide array of Western denominations at Pentecost, or near to it.

In the Roman Catholic Church, as at Easter, the liturgical rank of Monday and Tuesday of Pentecost week is a Double of the First Class and across many Western denominations, Pentecost is celebrated with an octave culminating on Trinity Sunday.

According to legend, King Arthur always gathered all his knights at the round table for a feast and a quest on Pentecost:

It was after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost where they were gathered in one place that John spent much of his time in Judea and in the surrounding lands preaching the gospel.

For some Protestants, the nine days between Ascension Day, and Pentecost are set aside as a time of fasting, and world-wide prayer in honor of the disciples ' time of prayer and unity awaiting the Holy Spirit.

Before 1955, the option existed of blessing the baptismal font on the Vigil of Pentecost, and this was the only time the Paschal candle would be lit at services after Ascension.

* Pentecost – the feast of 50 days after Passover ; the church celebrates this day " in much the same manner in which the early church observed it in Acts 2 ..." This is also the time of their General Assembly, in which members from their churches travel to Cleveland, Tennessee for a week-long gathering and special service schedule.

In 1937, the Federal Council of Churches ( now known as the National Council of Churches ) recommended that the entire part of the Christian calendar between Pentecost and Advent be named Kingdomtide ; however, two years later the Methodist Episcopal Church adopted the term only for the second half of this time period.

In the Roman Rite, the word " Alleluia " is associated with joy and is especially favoured in Paschal time, the time between Easter and Pentecost, perhaps because of the association of the Hallel ( Alleluia psalms ) chanted at Passover.

During this time, the word is added widely to verses and responses associated with prayers, to antiphons of psalms, and, during the Octave of Easter and on Pentecost Sunday, to the dismissal at the end of Mass (" Ite missa est ").

In the Southern Hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate the week of prayer, for example around Pentecost ( as originally suggested by the Faith and Order movement in 1926, and Pope Leo XIII in 1894 ), which is also a symbolic date for the unity of the church.

Already by the fourth century it was accepted as normal time of administering them, though it was allowed, e. g. by Pope Siricius ( 384-399 ), also on Pentecost.
