Since the late eighteenth century, the lead bulla has been replaced with a red ink stamp of Saints Peter and Paul with the reigning Pope's name encircling the picture, though very formal letters, e. g. the bull of Pope John XXIII convoking the Second Vatican Council, still receive the lead seal.

That summer, Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia was defeated at the Second Battle of Bull Run.

At the time the poem was published, the heroic couplet style in which it was written was a moderately new genre of poetry, and Pope's most ambitious work.

It did some damage to Pope's reputation for a time, but not to his profits.

Pope's work was found to be full of references to the people and places of his time, and these aided people's understanding of the past.

By the time of Pope's death, The National Enquirer empire included Weekly World News, and Distribution Services, Inc.

In 1806 he published an edition of Alexander Pope's works with notes and an essay, in which he laid down certain canons as to poetic imagery which, subject to some modification, were later accepted, but which were received at the time with strong opposition by admirers of Pope and his style.
