During the tour for the previous album, the band had added Sonny & Cher's young session drummer Jeff Porcaro, and also added vocalist-percussionist Royce Jones and vocalist-keyboardist Michael McDonald.

The 1975 LP Katy Lied saw the duo using a diverse group of session players, including Porcaro, Paich, and McDonald, as well as guitarist Elliott Randall, jazz saxophonist Phil Woods, saxophonist / bass-guitarist Wilton Felder, percussionist / vibraphonist / keyboardist Victor Feldman, keyboardist ( and later producer ) Michael Omartian, and guitarist Larry Carlton, with only Dias, Becker, and Fagen remaining from the original group.

Michael McDonald provided backup vocals on the song " I'll Be Over You ", while Eagles founder and songwriting giant Don Henley appeared on the Steve Porcaro penned track " Lea ".

David Hungate, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro and Bobby Kimball were recruited before their first album release.

Luke and Steve Porcaro were high school classmates, and continued the band Rural Still Life ( the name shortened to Still Life ) after Paich and Jeff graduated.

Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and David Hungate were present, with Mike Porcaro's and Jeff Porcaro's family members accepting their awards in absentia.

Session guitarist / keyboard player Mike McEvoy ( Michael J McEvoy ) co-wrote the songs on their Getahead album and drummer Jeff Porcaro played on three tracks (" Cascade ", " Can't Grow Trees on Money ", " Who Are You ").

David Paich and Jeff Porcaro had played together as session musicians on several albums and decided to form a band.

In the summer of 2010, Toto reformed and went on a short European tour, with a new lineup, to benefit Mike Porcaro, who had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ) and is no longer an active member of the band.

Having played on many sessions with drummer Jeff Porcaro ( the son of noted session percussionist Joe Porcaro ), whom he met while attending Grant High School in North Hollywood, California where they formed the band Rural Still Life, the two began to seriously discuss the possibility of forming their own band.

Englishman Simon Phillips was the only drummer ever contacted to replace Jeff Porcaro since the band knew that Porcaro liked Phillips and because Lukather worked with Simon on a previous tour with Santana and Jeff Beck in Japan in 1986.

Toto went on a small promotional tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

The release featured extensive keyboard work from Steve Porcaro and a duet with Joseph Williams on the first single, " Bottom of Your Soul ".

Jeff Porcaro, who had been playing drums with Steely Dan since 1973, became a mentor to Lukather and furthered his interest in session work.

Steely Dan was still considered a true “ group ” at the time this, their third album, was released ; in addition to core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, guitarists Jeff “ Skunk ” Baxter and Denny Dias and drummer Jim Hodder ( as well as multi-instrumentalist Victor Feldman ) had appeared on both previous Steely Dan releases along with a host of session aces ; all five appeared on the inside cover of the album, though Hodder was replaced on drums by Jim Gordon and Jeff Porcaro for the recordings ( Hodder did, however, contribute backing vocals to " Parker's Band ").

Lukather's reputation as a guitarist and his association with Paich and Jeff Porcaro, who also became established artists, allowed him to secure a solid flow of session work in the 1970s and 1980s.

Porcaro was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the eldest son of Los Angeles session percussionist Joe Porcaro.
