He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant ' Onofrio, and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto, also in Naples.

He became the favourite pupil of his master Porpora, of whom it is said that, having kept the young Caffarelli working from one sheet of exercises for six years, he eventually declared: " Go, my son: I have no more to teach you.

Nicola Porpora, ( much later to be Haydn's master ), set the work to music, and the success was so great that the famed Roman prima donna, Marianna Bulgarelli, " La Romanina ", sought out Metastasio, and took him on as her protégé.

Nicola ( Antonio ) Porpora ( or Niccolò Porpora ) ( 17 August 16863 March 1768 ) was an Italian composer of Baroque operas ( see opera seria ) and teacher of singing, whose most famous singing student was the castrato Farinelli.

Porpora was born in Naples.

Haydn later remembered Porpora thus: " There was no lack of Asino, Coglione, Birbante cullion, rascal, and pokes in the ribs, but I put up with it all, for I profited greatly from Porpora in singing, in composition, and in the Italian language.

A good linguist, who was admired for the idiomatic fluency of his recitatives, and a man of considerable literary culture, Porpora was also celebrated for his conversational wit.

It is alleged that Rosa, along with other painters — Coppola, Paolo Porpora, Domenico Gargiulo, Pietro del Po, Marzio Masturzo, the two Vaccari and Cadogna — all under the captaincy of Aniello Falcone, formed the Compagnia della Morte, whose mission it was to hunt down Spaniards in the streets, not sparing even those who had sought religious asylum.

Like Farinelli, Caffarelli was a student of Nicola Porpora.

His teacher, Porpora, who ( according to Burney ) loathed Caffarelli's overweening arrogance, nonetheless claimed that he was " the greatest singer Italy had ever produced ".

While there, he was a pupil of Niccolò Piccinni and Nicola Porpora.
