In 1167, Henry gave the County of Schwerin to his vassal Gunzelin von Hagen, and the rest of the country around the city was returned to Niklot's son Pribislav, forming a ducal hereditary line that lasted until 1918.

The 1164 Obotrite revolt led by Niklot's son Pribislav convinced Henry the Lion that keeping the Slavs as allies would be less troublesome.

Three years he was occupied in campaigns against the Slavic Wends, who as pagans were considered fair game, and whose subjugation to Christianity was the aim of the Wendish Crusade of 1147 in which Albert took part ; diplomatic measures were more successful, and by an arrangement made with the last of the Wendish princes of Brandenburg, Pribislav of the Hevelli, Albert secured this district when the prince died in 1150.

However, Albert inherited the Margraviate of Brandenburg from its last Wendish ruler, Pribislav, in 1157, and became the first Ascanian margrave.

Pribislav came to power at the castle of Brenna ( Brandenburg an der Havel ) in 1127.

Since his predecessor Meinfried had already accepted Christianity, it followed that Pribislav had already been baptized in childhood, in contrast to the ideas of medieval chroniclers that the prince had first been baptized as an adult.

Pribislav served as the godfather for Albert the Bear's first son, Otto.

Emperor Lothair III raised Pribislav to the status of a king in 1134, although Albert was granted control over the Northern March.

Because Pribislav was childless, Brandenburg passed to Albert after the death of the Slavic prince in Brandenburg an der Havel.

The last of them, Pribislav, died in 1150.

Albert was able to sign an inheritance contract with the Slavic Hevelli prince Pribislav and in 1150 succeeded him in his eastern territory around the fortress of Brandenburg an der Havel, which became the nucleus of his newly established Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157.

Petar Gojniković managed to defeat his cousin, the reigning Prince Pribislav Mutimirović, in 892.

When Niklot's exiled son, Pribislav, engineered an Obotrite rebellion, the pair retaliated by occupying Demmin and warding off Pribislav's Liutizian allies.

The duke returned the Christian Pribislav to power as Prince of Mecklenburg, Kessin, and Rostock, and a vassal of the Saxons.

Similar to Henry's reinstatement of Pribislav as a Saxon vassal, Valdemar allowed the Rani prince Jaromar to rule as a Christian Danish vassal.

Pribislav, a Christian prince of the Hevelli, bequeathed his lands to the Saxon Albert the Bear upon his death, thereby leading to the establishment of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

When Mutimir died, his son Pribislav inherited the rule, but he only ruled for a year ; Petar returned and defeated him in battle and seized the throne, Pribislav fled to Croatia with his brothers Bran and Stefan.

The baptized Hevelli prince Pribislav ( died 1150 ) finally bequested his lands to the Ascanian count Albert the Bear.

Boris I and Mutimir agreed on peace ( and perhaps an alliance ), and Mutimir sent his sons Pribislav and Stefan to the border to escort the prisoners, where they exchanged items as a sign of peace, Boris himself gave them " rich gifts ", while he was given " two slaves, two falcons, two dogs, and 80 furs ".

The house of Mecklenburg was originally a tribal chieftain dynasty of Slavic Obotrites, such as Niklot and Pribislav, who gradually became Germanized.
