Peter Gay ( born June 20, 1923 ) is Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University and former director of the New York Public Library's Center for Scholars and Writers ( 1997 – 2003 ).

Thus he sought a position in astronomy, and in 1807 was appointed Professor of Astronomy and Director of the astronomical observatory in Göttingen, a post he held for the remainder of his life.

He came from a prosperous family, worked briefly as a lawyer in the 1820s, and held the post of Professor of Geology at King's College London in the 1830s.

The suggestion that Humpty Dumpty was a " tortoise " siege engine, an armoured frame, used unsuccessfully to approach the walls of the Parliamentary held city of Gloucester in 1643 during the Siege of Gloucester in the English Civil War, was put forward in 1956 by Professor David Daube in The Oxford Magazine of February 16, 1956, on the basis of a contemporary account of the attack, but without evidence that the rhyme was connected.

Professor Diaconis received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1982, and in 1992 published ( with Dave Bayer ) a paper entitled " Trailing the Dovetail Shuffle to Its Lair " ( a term coined by magician Charles Jordan in the early 1900s ) which established rigorous results on how many times a deck of playing cards must be riffle shuffled before it can be considered random according to the mathematical measure total variation distance.

Swinburne University ’ s world-class photonics researcher Professor Min Gu was awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship from the Australian Federal Government in July 2010.

Professor DeVore was doing field research on the behavior and ecology of baboons in 1959, at the same time Jane Goodall was doing her research on chimpanzees and Robert Ardrey was writing African Genesis, and has also studied the San of southern Africa.

" In 1947 Mattingly joined the department of history at Columbia University where he spent the remainder of his career and was appointed William R. Shepherd Professor of European History in 1959.

He was a tutor and then reader at New College, from 1935 to 1959, when he became Professor of Ancient History at King's College London, retiring in 1970.
