Founded in 1868, the Visiting Artists Program ( VAP ) is one of the oldest public programs of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Formalized in 1951 by Flora Mayer Witkowsky's endowment of a supporting fund, the Visiting Artists Program hosts public presentations by artists, designers, and scholars each year in lectures, symposia, performances, and screenings.

The Goldfarb Center organizes and awards the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award annually ; it also organizes the The Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award, the William R. and Linda K. Visiting Scholars Program: An interdisciplinary research fellowship housed at the headquarter of the Academy in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a purpose is to stimulate and support scholarly work by promising scholars and practitioners in the early stages of their careers and to foster exchange between an emerging generation of scholars and Academy members with shared interests.
