Johannes Rau (; 16 January 193127 January 2006 ) was a German politician of the SPD.

Rau was born in the Barmen part of Wuppertal, Rhine Province, as the third of five children.

As a schoolboy, Rau was active in the Confessing Church, a circle of the German Protestant Church which actively resisted Nazism.

Rau was a member of the All-German People ’ s Party ( GVP ), which was founded by Gustav Heinemann.

In 1958, Rau and his political mentor, Gustav Heinemann, joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany ( SPD ), where he was active in the Wuppertal chapter.

In 1958, Rau was elected for the first time as member of the Landtag ( state parliament ) of North Rhine-Westphalia ( NRW ).

In 1998 Rau stepped down from his positions as SPD Chairman and Minister President, and on 23 May 1999, was elected Federal President by the Federal Assembly of Germany to succeed Roman Herzog ( CDU ).

As all Federal Presidents but his mentor Heinemann, who had not wished to be seen off in this manner, Rau was honored by a Großer Zapfenstreich which on his wish included the hymn " Jesus bleibet meine Freude " ( Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring ).

In 2000, Rau was the first German head of state since the Holocaust to address the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, in German.

The maxim of Rau was “ to reconcile, not divide ”.

Rau was awarded fifteen honorary doctorates.

Rau was known as a practising Christian ( and sometimes titled, " Brother John ", to ridicule his intense Christian position ; however, he sometimes used this term himself ).

Since 1995 Rau was aware of his dangerous aneurysm in the abdominal aorta, but declined an operation out of respect for his office and the upcoming election as president.

Fraser claimed that the way the Howard government handled the David Hicks, Cornelia Rau and Vivian Solon cases was questionable.

After the very close relationship between the quagga and surviving zebras was discovered, the Quagga Project was started by Reinhold Rau ( 1932 – 2006 ) in South Africa to recreate the quagga by selective breeding from plains zebra stock, with the eventual aim of reintroducing them to the wild.

The SPD's candidate for chancellor was the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau.

It was named for an important chief, Kau Rau Maw Nee ( Walking Turtle ).

Sven Rau and Max Loesel of Motorola-Europe added a mechanical specification to the system, basing it on the Eurocard standard that was then late in the standardization process.

One key factor in developing the popularity of the music in the UK and across Europe in the early 1960s was the success of the American Folk Blues Festival tours, organised by German promoters Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau.

He was also popular with the nickname ' Rau ' ( in Marathi ' र ा ऊ ').

* A Marathi serial " Rau " was made on the story of Bajirao and Mastani in the 90s.

At some stage he was joined by Kereopa Te Rau, the infamous eyeball-eater from the Volkner Incident, and between them they mustered about 110 supporters.

The constitutional advisor was Sir Benegal Narsing Rau ( who became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice, 1950 – 54 ).

In July 2009, shortly after retiring, Rau announced his return to school to start a career as a teacher despite having offers from clubs abroad and from the second division.

Today, only retaining walls and some flagstone paths remain, but photos of both the Novitiate Academy building and Dr Rau ’ s mansion can be seen as part of interpretive signage at the site.

In July 2005, Rau moved to Arminia Bielefeld, where he also would also be a backup and suffer severely with injuries ( only an average of eight league contests in four years ), being released on 30 June 2009, before announcing his retirement on 6 July.

During 2005 Vanstone became involved in some major controversies, one of them involving a defecting Chinese diplomat, Chen Yonglin, whilst others involved the deportation of Australian citizens and permanent residents who her department considered undesirable – the Cornelia Rau, Vivian Alvarez Solon, Stefan Nystrom and Robert Jovicic cases.

At one point, doctors believed that Rau had schizoaffective bipolar.

The best-known Lilpop company was The Industrial Society of the " Lilpop, Rau & Loewenstein " Mechanical Factory, one of the biggest metallurgic factories in the Polish Kingdom and the II Republic.

In 1977, Rau became Chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia SPD, and in 1978 Minister President of the state, were he remained until 1998, with four successful elections for the SPD, which became strongest party in the Landtag each time and gained an absolute majority three times, in 1980, 1985, 1990 and finally 1995.

Architects who have been strongly influenced by the anthroposophic style include Imre Makovecz in Hungary, Hans Scharoun and Joachim Eble in Germany, Erik Asmussen in Sweden, Kenji Imai in Japan, Thomas Rau, Anton Alberts and Max van Huut in Holland, Christopher Day and Camphill Architects in the UK, Thompson and Rose in America, Denis Bowman in Canada, and Walter Burley Griffin and Gregory Burgess in Australia.

Rau left school in 1949 and worked as a journalist and publisher, especially with the Protestant Youth Publishing House.

From 1995 onwards, Rau led an SPD-Greens coalition in NRW.

In 1994, Rau tried for the first time to become Federal President, but lost to Roman Herzog.

Rau twice served as President of the Bundesrat in 1982 / 83 and 1994 / 95, and thus deputised for the Federal President.

Rau had a deep and lifelong commitment to bringing reconciliation between Germany and its past.

Christina Rau is a granddaughter of her husband's mentor, Gustav Heinemann, former President of Germany.

After leaving office, Rau lived with his family in the federal capital, Berlin.
