It is east of Rawtenstall, north of Rochdale, and east of Preston.
Bacup is surrounded by open moor and grassland on all sides with the exception of Stacksteads at the west which forms a continuous urban area with Waterfoot and Rawtenstall.

Rawtenstall and line
The East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society was originally established at Helmshore Station in the mid 1960s with the aim of reopening the railway line to Stubbins, the project was abandoned with the organisation relocating to Bury in the 1970s and eventually reopening the Rawtenstall to Bury line.
The Manchester and Leeds Railway Company ( later the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ) arrived in Castleton in 1839, and it was here that the line formerly diverged to Bury, Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall, Bacup and finally rejoined the main line at Rochdale.
The railway arrived in Ramsbottom in 1846 when the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway Company built a railway from Bury to a junction with the Manchester and Bolton Railway and extended the line northwards to Rawtenstall with a station in the town centre.
The line between Bury and Rawtenstall remained open to passengers until 1972 and for freight until 1980.
The Manchester and Bolton railway line passes through and there was a junction with the line to Bury and Rossendale which opened to Rawtenstall in September 1846.

Following a serious accident at Rawtenstall, an embargo was placed on this form of traction in 1911.

Though located in Waterfoot, rather than Rawtenstall, the traditional grammar school, Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School takes part of its name from the town.

After leaving Flowery Field he returned to his home club Rawtenstall where he has had great success.
