Judith Arlene Resnik ( April 5, 1949 – January 28, 1986 ) was an American engineer and a NASA astronaut who died in the destruction of Space Shuttle Challenger during the launch of mission STS-51-L.

Resnik was the second American female astronaut, logging 145 hours in orbit.

Judith Arlene Resnik was born in 1949 to Sara and Marvin, an optometrist, in Akron, Ohio ; her brother Charles was born four years later.

While working toward her doctorate, Resnik was affiliated with the National Institutes of Health as a biomedical engineer.

She was likewise a mission specialist aboard Challenger for STS-51-L. Resnik was the first American Jewish astronaut to go into space, the first Jewish woman, and only the second Jew to go to space ( after Boris Volynov of the Soviet Union ).

The IEEE Judith A. Resnik Award was established in 1986 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is presented annually to an individual or team in recognition of outstanding contributions to space engineering in areas of relevance to the IEEE.

She was also honored by the naming of lunar crater Resnik, located within the Apollo impact basin on the far side of the Moon.

Resnik was born in Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania.

In 1980, Resnik was named executive vice president of Philip Morris ' Tobacco Technology Group.

It is a popular summer destination for many inhabitants of Resnik and for Belgraders who have weekend-houses in the area, even though the water was never tested and the banks are not arranged.

In September 2007 an official motion was started by the municipality of Voždovac to create new sub-Avalan municipality ( Avalski Venac ), which would include the settlements of Ripanj, Beli Potok, Pinosava and Zuce from Voždovac, Vrčin from the municipality of Grocka and Resnik.

After the recovery of the vehicle cockpit, it was discovered that three of the crew PEAPs were activated: those of mission specialist Ellison Onizuka, mission specialist Judith Resnik, and pilot Michael J. Smith.

The creek of Pariguz flows through the southern parts of Resnik before it empties into the Topčiderka.

Resnik has many streets, schools, community centers, and other structures named for her in numerous locations.

Following the Challenger disaster, examination of the recovered vehicle cockpit revealed that three of the crew Personal Egress Air Packs were activated: those of Onizuka, mission specialist Judith Resnik, and pilot Michael J. Smith.

This is the only evidence available from the disaster that shows Onizuka and Resnik were alive after the cockpit separated from the vehicle.
