Preterism holds that the contents of Revelation constitute a prophecy of events that were fulfilled in the 1st century.

In Revelation 9: 7-11, Abaddon is described as " The Destroyer ", the angel of the abyss, and as the king of a plague of locusts resembling horses with crowned human faces, women's hair, lions ' teeth, wings, and the tail of a scorpion that torment people for five months.

The symbolism of Revelation 9: 11 leaves the exact identification of Abaddon open for interpretation.

Eusebius ( c. 263 – 339 ) was inclined to class the Apocalypse with the accepted books but also listed it in the Antilegomena, with his own reservation for identification of John of Patmos with John the Apostle, pointing out there were large differences in Greek skill and styles between the Gospel of John, which he attributed to John the Apostle, and the Revelation.

In Revelation 21-23, as in the closing visions of Ezekiel, the prophet is transported to a high mountain, where a heavenly messenger measures the symmetrical new Jerusalem, complete with high walls and twelve gates, the dwelling-place of God, producing a state of perfect well-being for his people.

E. W. Bullinger interpreted the creatures appearing in the books of Ezekiel ( and thence in Revelation ) as the middle signs of the four quarters of the Zodiac, with the Lion as Leo, the Bull is Taurus, the Man representing Aquarius and the Eagle standing in for Scorpio.

Revelation, for example, may be seen as referring to the major players and events leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 AD, or the struggle of Christianity to survive the persecutions of the Roman Empire, as many other interpretations are considered.

" 19: 7-8 Christ is represented throughout Revelation as “ the Lamb ,” symbolizing the giving of his life as an atoning sacrifice for the people of the world, just as lambs were sacrificed on the altar for the sins of Israel.

In the end, according to Revelation, the Lamb and his armies are victorious and the Beast, generally identified as the Antichrist, is captured and thrown into the lake of fire, while his battle casualties are left as food for the birds.

While only Revelation speaks of a period of a thousand years for Christ ’ s rule on Earth, there are numerous other prophecies in both testaments concerning a future age of peace.

Despite this huge show of force, the battle will be short-lived, for Ezekiel, Daniel, and Revelation all say that this last desperate attempt to destroy the people and the city of God will end in disaster: " I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed.

" 65: 17 The author of Revelation has a corresponding vision: " I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.

Other historicists have seen no significance in the date that Revelation was written, and have even held to an early date while Kenneth L. Gentry, Jr., makes an exegetical and historical argument for the pre-AD 70 composition of Revelation.

The Bible refers to the denarius as a day's wage for a common laborer ( Matthew 20: 2 ; John 12: 5 ). The value of the denarius is referred to, though perhaps not literally, in the Bible at Revelation 6: 6: " And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, ' A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius Vulgate: bilibris tritici denario et tres bilibres hordei denario, δηναρίου in the original Greek ; and do not damage the oil and the wine.

In the New Testament the term is used for everything from Jesus as the image of the invisible God ( Colossians 1: 15 ) to the image of Caesar on a Roman coin () to the image of the Beast in the Apocalypse ( Revelation 14: 19 ).

But before this he had already devoted to the Revelation another treatment, a rather arbitrary recasting of the commentary of Saint Victorinus, with whose chiliastic views he was not in accord, substituting for the chiliastic conclusion a spiritualizing exposition of his own, supplying an introduction, and making certain changes in the text.

Moreover, the Apocalypse tells us that its author was on the island of Patmos " for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus ", when he was honoured with the heavenly Revelation contained in the Apocalypse ( Revelation 1: 9 ).
