The genus Rhododendron was named by Linnaeus from the Greek word, itself derived from rhodos, rose, and dendron, tree.

Rhododendron ( from Ancient Greek ῥόδον " rose " and δένδρον " tree ") is a genus of over 1000 species of woody plants in the heath family, either evergreen or deciduous.

Xenophon described the odd behavior of Greek soldiers after having consumed honey in a village surrounded by Rhododendron ponticum during the march of the Ten Thousand in 401 BC.

The flowers of some rhododendrons can appear similar to those of some hydrangeas, but Rhododendron ( including azalea ) is in a different order.

Nests also occurred in Virginia creeper ( Parthenocissus quinquefolia ), spice bush ( Lindera benzoin ), and azalea ( Rhododendron spp .).

The reserve is dedicated to the preservation of the western azalea ( Rhododendron occidentale ), whose pink and white flowers bloom in profusion each April and May.
