Several of Bulwer-Lytton's novels were made into operas, one of which, Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen ( 1842 ) by Richard Wagner, eventually became more famous than the novel.

He also wrote the historical plays Heinrich der Fünfte ( Leipzig, 1836 ), Cola Rienzi, Die Bräute von Florenz, Wendelin und Helene and Kaiser Otto III ( the four last being published in his Theater 1842 ).

This was followed by The Pilgrims of the Rhine ( 1834 ), The Last Days of Pompeii ( 1834 ), Rienzi, Last of the Roman Tribunes ( 1835 ), and Harold, the Last of the Saxons ( 1848 ).

Besides Shakespeare, he also translated a number of other works from English into Japanese, including Sir Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor and Bulwer-Lytton's novel Rienzi, the Last of the Roman Tribunes.

Rienzi is a town in Alcorn County, Mississippi.

The title is commonly shortened to Rienzi.

The opera is set in Rome and is based on the life of Cola di Rienzi ( 1313 – 1354 ), a late medieval Italian populist figure who succeeds in outwitting and then defeating the nobles and their followers and in raising the power of the people.

Rienzi is Wagner's third completed opera, and is mostly written in a grand opera style ; depictions of the mob, the liberal ethos associated with the hero and the political intervention of a reactionary clergy recall La vestale, Les Huguenots, and also Fromental Halévy's La Juive.

Hans von Bülow was later to joke that " Rienzi is Meyerbeer's best opera ".

Richard Wagner's Rienzi, the composer's first success ( produced Dresden, 1842 ) is totally Meyerbeerean in style.

Wagner was particularly enraged by the success of Le prophète in Paris, all the more so because he had earlier been a slavish admirer of Meyerbeer, who had given him financial support and used his influence to get Wagner ’ s early opera Rienzi, his first real success, staged in Dresden in 1841.

He was an early supporter of Richard Wagner, enabling the first production of the latter's opera, Rienzi, although Wagner later became a bitter enemy.

This campaign was as much a matter of personal spite as of racism – Wagner had learnt a great deal from Meyerbeer and indeed Wagner's early opera Rienzi ( 1842 ) was facetiously called by Hans von Bülow ' Meyerbeer's best opera '.

Despite Wagner's reservations, Rienzi remained one of his most successful operas until the early 20th century.

Baron Wolf Adolf August von Lüttichau ( 1786 – 1863 ), General Director of the Dresden Opera House since 1824With the support of Meyerbeer, a staging of Rienzi was arranged in Dresden ; Meyerbeer wrote to the Director of the Opera in Dresden, Baron von Lüttichau, that he found the opera " rich in fantasy and of great dramatic effect ".

In fact, Bologna became the location for several other Wagner opera premieres in Italy, notably with the composer present for his Rienzi.

In both 1980 and 1982, The Idlers performed at Carnegie Hall during Eve Queler's performance of Wagner's Rienzi opera.

Severn also painted such works as Cordelia Watching by the Bed of Lear, Shepherds in the Campagna, Shelley Composing Prometheus Unbound, Isabella and the Pot of Basil, Portia with the Casket, Ariel, Rienzi, The Infant of the Apocalypse Saved from the Dragon, a large altarpiece for the church of San Paolo fuori le Mura at Rome, and many portraits of statesman and aristocrats, including Baron Bunsen and William Gladstone.

He introduced many needed reforms in the administration of church affairs, and through his legate, Cardinal Albornoz, who was accompanied by Rienzi, he sought to restore order in Rome, where, in 1355, Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV was crowned with his permission, after previously having made an oath that he would quit the city on the day of the ceremony.

Wagner was writing Rienzi and hatched a plan to flee his creditors in Riga, escape to Paris via London and make his fortune by putting Rienzi on to the stage of the Paris Opéra.

He stayed in contact with the authorities through Adrian Cola Rienzi and although he was promised safe passage by the colonial authorities to testify at a commission of enquiry into the events of June 1937, he was arrested by the colonial government when he emerged to do so.

His earliest experiments followed the examples set by Weber ( Die Feen ) and Meyerbeer ( Rienzi ), but his most important formative influence was probably the symphonic music of Beethoven.

The premiere of Rienzi took place on October 20 in the new Dresden Opera House, designed by the architect Gottfried Semper and opened on April 14, 1841.

His first poetical essay was with the tragedy Cola di Rienzi ( 1851 ), followed in the same year by a comedy, Eine Nachtpartie Shakespeares, which was at once produced on the stage.

He exalted Cola di Rienzi, invoked the emperor Charles IV, and praised the Visconti ; in fact, his politics were affected more by impressions than by principles.

Currently led by Ancil Roget, the union was born out of the 1937 labour riots, the union was nominally led by the imprisoned TUB Butler but was actually organised by lawyer Adrian Cola Rienzi.

Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini and Richard Wagner were some of the first composers to use the tam-tam in their works ; Rossini in the final of act 3 of Armida ( 1817 ), Bellini in Norma ( 1831 ) and Wagner in Rienzi ( 1842 ).

Labatt's repertoire included: Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer's The African Maid, the title role in Gounod's Faust, Eleazar in Halévy's The Jewess, and the title roles in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser and Rienzi.

At this meeting Wagner read to Meyerbeer from the libretto of Rienzi, and Meyerbeer agreed to look through the score, which indeed he subsequently recommended for performance at Dresden.

Meyerbeer supported the young Wagner, both financially and in helping to obtain the premiere productions of both Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman at Dresden.

Moreover, Wagner's wife Minna, in a letter of October 28, 1840 to Wagner's friend Apel, who had likely first made the suggestion that Wagner compose Rienzi, mentions a plan to perform the overture to Rienzi " a fortnight hence ", but contains a clear indication that her husband had just been committed to a debtor's prison.

In 1841 Wagner moved to Meudon, just outside Paris, where the debt laws could be more easily evaded, whilst awaiting developments for Rienzi, having already written to King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony, requesting that he order a production of the work in Dresden.

: Wagner invested the musical realization of Rienzi with the unashamed extravagance and tasteless exaggeration of a Las Vegas hotel ... only the self-consciously deliberate and unabashed use of kitsch could match this musical egomania.

Wagner was at that time a sincere admirer of the older composer, who assisted him in arranging performances of Rienzi and Der fliegende Holländer in Dresden and Berlin.

She created several roles for Wagner – Adriano in Rienzi, Senta in The Flying Dutchman and Venus in Tannhäuser.

Verdi and Wagner also composed for the ophicleide as did Sir Arthur Sullivan in his Overture Di Ballo ( which, like Wagner's Rienzi, also has an additional part for serpent ).
