The early Mannerists in Florence — especially the students of Andrea del Sarto: Jacopo da Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino — are notable for elongated forms, precariously balanced poses, a collapsed perspective, irrational settings, and theatrical lighting.

The Gallery of Francis I, with its frescoes framed in stucco by Rosso Fiorentino, carried out between 1522 and 1540, was the first great decorated gallery built in France.

In 1531, the Florentine artist Rosso Fiorentino, having lost most of his possessions at the Sack of Rome in 1527, was invited by François I to come to France, where he began an extensive decorative program for the Château de Fontainebleau.

Together with Rosso Fiorentino he was one of the leading artists to work at the Chateau Fontainebleau ( where he is grouped with the so-called " First School of Fontainebleau ") spending much of his life there.

Freedberg compares his vibrant eccentric figures to those of the Florentine mannerist contemporary Rosso Fiorentino, yet more " optical and fluid ".
