LASFS ( the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society ) was founded at this time as a local branch of the SFL, while several competing local branches sprang up in New York City and immediately began feuding among themselves.

* Southern California hosted the Express of the USFL, the Xtreme of the XFL, the Dragons of the SFL and was expected to host an as-yet-unnamed franchise in the UFL, a promise that has yet to be fulfilled in the league's upcoming fourth season.

VME was originally written almost entirely in S3, a specially-designed system programming language based on Algol 68 ( however, VME / K was written primarily in the SFL assembly language ).
