STS-62 ( March 4-18, 1994 ) was a two-week microgravity research mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia.

On Flight Day 6, ( Wednesday, 9 March 1994 ) the STS-62 crew members devoted their time to the secondary experiment housed in Columbias middeck.

STS-62 launched March 4, 1994 and landed at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on March 18, 1994.

On March 4, 1994, Thuot was launched aboard on STS-62, a microgravity science and technology demonstration mission which carried the United States Microgravity Payload ( USMP-2 ) and the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology ( OAST-2 ) payloads.

STS-62, one of the longest Space Shuttle missions, concluded on March 18, 1994, with a landing at the Kennedy Space Center after orbiting the Earth 224 times in 13 days, 23 hours, and 16 minutes and traveling 5. 8 million miles.

As payload cameras showed the Earth vista from up, the STS-62 crew of Columbia sent a special goodnight message — the Bette Midler song " From a Distance " – for the men and women watching over them from below in Houston.

She has flown aboard missions STS-32 ( 1990 ), STS-46 ( 1992 ), STS-62 ( 1994 ), STS-81 ( 1997 ), and STS-98 ( 2001 ).

He was the pilot on STS-46 in 1992 and STS-62 in 1994, and was mission commander on STS-75 in 1996.

A veteran of three space flights, STS-36 in 1990, STS-49 in 1992 and STS-62 in 1994, Thuot has logged over 654 hours in space, including 17. 7 hours on three space walks.

He was the pilot on mission STS-36, and spacecraft commander on missions STS-54, STS-62 and STS-77.

The STS-62 crew began its sleep shift on time at 1: 53 pm CST, and was scheduled to be awoken at 9: 53 pm CST to begin its ninth day of orbit operations.

STS-62 was a 14-day mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia which consisted of 5 crewmembers that conducted a broad range of science and technology experiments with Earth applications to materials processing, biotechnology, advanced technology, and environmental monitoring.

Due to the long duration of STS-62, each crew member will get two half-days off during the 14 day mission.

The team reports they are very pleased with the performance of the IDGE as well as the number and quality of the dendrites grown so far during the STS-62 mission.

Other experiments onboard STS-72 included the Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Experiment ( SSBUV-8 ) ( previously flown on STS-34, STS-41, STS-43, STS-45, STS-56, STS-62 and STS-66 ), EDFT-03, Shuttle Laser Altimeter Payload ( SLA-01 / GAS ( 5 )), VDA-2, National Institutes of Health NIH-R3 Experiment, Space Tissue Loss Experiment ( STL / NIH-C ), Pool Boiling Experiment ( PBE ) ( hardware previously flown on STS-47, STS-57 and STS-60 ) and the Thermal Energy Storage ( TES-2 ) experiment ( previously flown on STS-69 ).

Gemar has flown on three Space Shuttle missions ( STS-38, STS-48 and STS-62 ).

The middeck payloads took center stage as the STS-62 crew worked through the second half of its fifth day on orbit.

The SAMS team began sending results of their data collection during various orbiter activities to STS-62 crew members.

Columbia astronauts Andrew M. Allen and Charles D. Gemar got a half day off from their busy schedule operating the many microgravity experiments on STS-62.
