Saint Bruno of Querfurt ( c. 974 – February 14, 1009 ), also known as Brun and Boniface, is a sainted missionary bishop and martyr, who was beheaded near the border of Kievan Rus and Lithuania while trying to spread Christianity in Eastern Europe.

While in Rome for Otto's imperial coronation, Bruno met Saint Adalbert of Prague, the first Apostle of the Prussians, killed a year later, which inspired Bruno to write a biography of St Adalbert when he reached the recently Christianized and consolidated Kingdom of Hungary himself.

Bruno spent much time at the monastery where Adalbert had become a monk and where abbot John Canaparius may have written a life of Saint Adalbert.

The Carthusian Order, also called the Order of Saint Bruno, is a Roman Catholic religious order of enclosed monastics.

The order was founded by Saint Bruno of Cologne in 1084 and includes both monks and nuns.

The name Carthusian is derived from the Chartreuse Mountains ; Saint Bruno built his first hermitage in the valley of these mountains in the French Alps.

Pope Saint Leo IX ( 21 June 1002 – 19 April 1054 ), born Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, was Pope from 12 February 1049 to his death.

His stay in the city is marked by two characteristic and important productions: the superb écorché ( 1767 ), an anatomical model which has served as a guide to all artists since his day, and the statue of Saint Bruno in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome.

It was probably derived from a Germanization ( Brus-berg and Brunsberg ) of the older Prussian name, or possibly named after Saint Bruno of Querfurt, who had been martyred on the Kievan Rus ' border in 1009.

He reached the zenith of his career with a succession of classic films such as, Strangers on a Train ( 1951 ) which is about two train passengers: tennis pro Guy ( Farley Granger ) and Bruno ( Robert Walker ) who staged a battle of wits and traded murders with each other, Dial M For Murder ( 1954 ) with Ray Milland as a villainous husband who attempts to murder his wealthy wife ( Grace Kelly ), Rear Window ( 1954 ) which is about man ( James Stewart ) being convinced that his neighbour is a killer, To Catch a Thief ( 1955 ), a lightweight thriller set in South of France, Vertigo ( 1958 ), with James Stewart as a retired police detective who becomes obsessed with the disturbed enigmatic ' wife ' ( Kim Novak ) of an old friend, and North by Northwest in which an advertising executive ( Cary Grant ) is mistaken for a non-existent spy and chased across the country while aided by a mysterious woman ( Eva Marie Saint ).

Although canon 603 makes no provison for associations of hermits, these do exist ( for example the " Hermits of Bethlehem " in Chester NJ and the " Hermits of Saint Bruno " in the U. S. A .; see also lavra, skete ).

In 1084, Saint Hugh gave it to hermit Saint Bruno and his followers who founded the Carthusian Order.

At one time Bishop Bruno was proposed to have been father of Agatha, wife of Edward the Exile and the grandfather of another saint: Saint Margaret of Scotland, but this solution to Agatha's parentage has passed out of favour.

Since the Carthusian Order maintains a strict observance of humility, Saint Bruno was never formally canonized.

Saint Bruno has long been regarded the patron saint of Calabria.

Some masterpieces of this Romanesque art are the shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral, the Baptismal font at St Bartholomew's Church, Liège by Renier de Huy, the Stavelot Triptych, the shrine of Saint Remacle in Stavelot, the shrine of Saint Servatius in Maastricht or, Notger's gospel in Liège.

Gennep was the title of a comital family, known descendants of which are the famous Saint Norbert of Gennep and William of Gennep, Archbishop-Elector of Cologne.

The township contains these five cemeteries: Cologne United Methodist, Saint Bernard, Saint John's United Church of Christ, Snapsburg and Zion Lutheran Church.

It left Paris and travelled via Brussels, Cologne, Hanover, Berlin, Konigsberg ( now Kaliningrad ) and Dünaburg to Saint Petersburg.

He eventually abandons his home and goes to Cologne, where he becomes a builder on a shrine to Saint Peter.

He forced Saint Willibrord and his monks to flee and advanced as far as Cologne, where he defeated Charles Martel, Pippin's natural son, in 716.

In other cases, established anglicised names have remained in common use where there is no national pride at stake: this is the case with Ghent ( Gent, or Gand ), Munich ( München ), Cologne ( Köln ), Vienna ( Wien ), Naples ( Napoli ), Rome ( Roma ), Milan ( Milano ), Athens ( Αθήνα, Athina ), Moscow ( Москва, Moskva ), Saint Petersburg ( Санкт-Петербург, Sankt-Peterburg ), Warsaw ( Warszawa ), Prague ( Praha ), Bucharest ( Bucureşti ), Belgrade ( Београд, Beograd ), Lisbon ( Lisboa ), and other European cities whose names have been familiar in their anglicised forms for centuries.

Saint Hubert was widely venerated in the Middle Ages and partly because of his noble birth several military orders were named after him: the Bavarian, the Bohemian and that of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne.

As a sound engineer, he worked with pop musicians such as Reinhard Mey, Peter Maffay, and the Fischer Choirs ; in the field of classical music, he is doing recordings of the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra ( Washington, D. C .), the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra and various famous chamber music artists, to mention only Il Giardino Armonico, Andreas Staier, and Concerto Cologne ( Concerto Köln ).

Examples of surviving portions of his works include: the Shabuhragan ( Middle Persian ), the Book of Giants ( numerous fragments in many languages ), the Fundamental Epistle ( quoted in length by Saint Augustine ), a number of fragments of his Living Gospel ( or Great Gospel ), a Syriac excerpt quoted by Theodore Bar Konai, and his Letter to Edessa contained in the Cologne Mani-Codex.

Saint Anno II ( c. 1010 – December 4, 1075 ) was Archbishop of Cologne from 1056 to 1075.

Some say that it carried not water, but wine to the city, for example, the Gesta Treverorum of Maternus, Bishop of Cologne, ( 4th century ) and the Hymn to Saint Anno of the 11th century.

Born in Cologne, he was sent by his family to Paris, and after travelling in Italy returned to France and made his first appearance at the Salon in 1824 ; his reputation, however, was not established until three years later, when he exhibited Tasso at the Convent of Saint Onophrius.

The vestibule with canted corners and identical side chapels leads to a second vestibule, repeated on the far side of the transept, dominated by the over lifesize Saint Bruno of Cologne by Jean Antoine Houdon ( 1766 ).
