It was recently announced by Liberty Properties that Sandton City will receive a R1, 77-billion upgrade.

For instance, the needs of a high-income commercial centre such as Sandton will be very different from the needs of a low-income area such as Orange Farm.

In a similar fashion, people from predominantly or traditionally Jewish areas in the Johannesburg area ( such as Sandton, Linksfield or Victory Park ) may have accents influenced by Yiddish or Hebrew ancestry.

Liberty Properties chief executive Samuel Ogbu has envisaged the complex as South Africa's very own Wall Street " Africa is not for sissies, but we have a bold vision, which is to see the Sandton City precinct as our own Wall Street.

Concerns have been raised as to whether Sandton has the necessary road and water infrastructure to sustain the massive development that is characteristic of Johannesburg in the 21st century ( since the demise of Apartheid and the Group Areas Act ).

Inner city crime and neglect have resulted in the large-scale migration of businesses and commerce away from the Central Business District to the more affluent northern suburbs such as Houghton and Parktown, and to northern cities such as Sandton, Midrand and Pretoria ( white flight ).

It is the most dense collection of skyscrapers in Africa, however due to white flight and urban blight, many of the buildings are unoccupied as tenants have left for more secure locations in the Northern Suburbs, in particular Sandton and Rosebank.

But much of the " new money " has moved north to Sandton, including investment banks, financial consultants and the like.

There are few shops in Houghton itself, apart from those in petrol stations, however the area is close to numerous commercial nodes in Johannesburg, including those in Oaklands, Norwood, Killarney, Rosebank and Sandton.

The highway connects the southern areas ( including Booysens, Eldorado Park and Soweto ) with the city centre and extends further north through Sandton.

Originally part of the main road between central Johannesburg and Pretoria, it runs along through the north-eastern parts of the city from Hillbrow to Sandton, passing through numerous older suburbs, including Orange Grove and Houghton, before it becomes the Pretoria Main Road ( later Old Pretoria Main Road ) ( R101 ) which passes Alexandra Township and continues to Midrand and Pretoria.

There are also few cluster developments and the huge grounds on which homes are set means that the suburb of Sandhurst remains quiet, leafy and sedate, its tree-lined streets devoid of traffic except during peak hour, despite its proximity to Sandton ’ s Central Business District.

In November 2011, Zara entered the South African market with a flagship store in the upmarket suburb of Sandton, in Sandton City Shopping Complex, Johannesburg.

Such a definition of Johannesburg is, however, highly problematic as the city is decentralized with suburbs like Sandton now of greater economic importance than the city centre.

In keeping with the definition of a metropolitan area, Johannesburg is multi-nodal, with several centres which are important within their own right: these include Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Germiston, Roodepoort, Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni and Springs.

The area is fairly heavily populated with the large urban centre of Sandton located in the region, however there are also many parks with large biodiversity.

Regions 2 ( Midrand ), 3 ( Sandton ), and 8 ( Central ) were to its west, with Midrand also forming its northern boundary.

First named as an area in 1949, it was established in 1969 as a suburb of Sandton and provided with tarred roads and municipal services, but after municipal boundaries were revised following the end of Apartheid, Sandton was merged with Johannesburg to form part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Formerly an independent municipality, Roodepoort became part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in the late 1990s, along with Randburg and Sandton.
