Iolanthe ( 1882 ) was the first of the operas to open at the Savoy.

Respected as the wife of an esteemed man, she was in fact the symbol of the uncertain, irresolute, ambiguous tendency of the Savoy dynasty to be open to any possibly safe compromise.
