Hanns Martin Schleyer, for example, really had been a member of the SS.

After 1885 Schleyer had to retire from his pastoral duties due to ill health, though he was still involved in the Volapük movement until it fell apart a few years later.

After World War II, Schleyer was a prisoner of war for three years, because he had held the rank of an officer ( Untersturmführer ) in the SS.
