Pinnipeds: The Kuril islands are home to two species of Eared Seal, the Steller Sea Lion and northern fur seal, both of which aggregate on several smaller islands along the chain in the summer to form several of the largest reproductive rookeries in Russia.

It is not known whether the Northern Fur Seal or the Guadalupe Fur Seal were the islands ' native fur seal, although the Northern Fur Seal is the species that began to recolonize the islands in 1996.

Seal skins have been used by aboriginal people for millennia to make waterproof jackets and boots, and seal fur to make fur coats.

There are seven seals at UnderWater World, one New Zealand fur seal, two Australian fur seals and four Australian sea lions which make up part of the Seal Island Exhibit.
