Throughout the First Age and most of the Second Age, the Dwarves maintain mostly friendly trading relationships with Men and Elves ( the Dwarves of Nogrod's treachery towards Thingol of Doriath being an exception ).

The Elves call the race of Men Atani in Quenya, literally meaning " Second People " ( the Elves being the First ), but also Hildor ( Followers ), Apanónar ( After-born ), and Fírimar or Firyar ( Mortals ).

Here below follow the short descriptions of the most important groups of Men in the First, Second and Third Ages.

In the second millennium of the Second Age, there was an exodus of Men from an overcrowded Númenor: the King's Men, who wanted to conquer more lands, and the Faithful who were persecuted by the Kings.

From their ranks, Sauron recruited Men who would become some of the nine Ringwraiths in the second millennium of the Second Age.

After Morgoth's defeat, Sauron extended his influence over the Easterlings, and although Sauron was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at the end of the Second Age, the Easterlings were the first enemies to attack Gondor again in.

In the Second Age the High Pass was used by the army of Gil-galad and Elendil when they marched to Mordor in the War of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

The Sindarin word Edain ( the second syllable is pronounced as English dine rather than English dane ; the stress falls on the first syllable ), singular Adan ( Quenya Atani, Atan ) literally meant Second People, and originally referred to all Men, but later it only applied to the Men of Beleriand and their descendants.

When the Númenóreans returned to Middle-earth in the Second Age, they encountered many Men who were obviously related to the Atani: they classified these Men as Middle Men, and established friendly relations with them.

A fourth kind of Men came with the Second House, and called themselves Drughu.

The Second House of Men briefly dwelt here until they were nearly wiped out in an Orc-raid.

One of the languages of Arda in Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, it was spoken by the Men of Númenor during the Second Age.

Some see this as a depiction of the Ascension of Christ ( in which case the figures on the lower lintel would represent the disciples witnessing the event ) while others see it as representing the Parousia, or Second Coming of Christ ( in which case the lintel figures could be either the prophets who foresaw that event or else the ' Men of Galilee ' mentioned in Acts 1: 9-11 ).

The New Men deals with the scientific community's involvement in ( and reaction to ) the development and deployment of nuclear weapons during the Second World War.

Another attribution is to the Men of the Great Assembly, during the period of the Second Temple.

Barad-dûr was besieged for seven years by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and was levelled after Sauron's defeat at the end of the Second Age, but because it was created using the power of the One Ring, its foundations could not be destroyed completely unless the Ring itself was destroyed.

Whereas the Second Prophecy explicitly states that the Elves and Valar shall be renewed after Dagor Dagorath and that the fate of Men is unknown, The Silmarillion states that Men will participate in singing the Second Music, and that it is the fate of the Elves that is unknown, and nothing is said of the fate of the Valar.
