Senator Inouye, wrapping up the debate, said:

In support of the bill, Senator Inouye responded that failing to pass the bill would discriminate against the Native Hawaiians, for Congress had already provided federal recognition of the other indigenous and aboriginal peoples of America.

He was defeated by incumbent Democrat U. S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye in the General Election, with Inouye taking 76 % of the vote to Cavasso's 21 %.
