Thomas Joseph Sestak ( March 9, 1936-April 3, 1987 ) was an American collegiate Professional Football defensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League.

Over the 1964 and 1965 seasons, Sestak and his defense mates held opposing rushers without a touchdown for seventeen consecutive games, a Professional Football record that still stands.

During the sixties, only six professional defensive linemen were unanimous All-League selections for three or more years, Sestak ( 3 ), Bob Lily ( 5 ), Merlin Olsen ( 4 ), Willy Davis ( 3 ), Gino Marchetti ( 3 ), and Deacon Jones ( 3 ).

After becoming the Republican nominee for the 2010 U. S. Senate election in Pennsylvania, Toomey was elected to the seat on November 2, 2010, defeating his Democratic opponent, retired Admiral and Congressman Joe Sestak.

He was defeated in November 2006 for reelection by Joe Sestak.

On October 26, 2006, American Prospect magazine reported that e-mails recently had been forwarded to the Justice Department that describe alleged efforts by official members of Weldon's staff to call Navy employees for information and negative statements about Democratic opponent Sestak.

On November 7, 2006, 56 % of the electorate voted for Sestak while 44 % voted for Weldon, leading to Weldon's removal from Congress.

In 1962, following an innovative AFL trend of drafting players from small colleges, the Bills drafted Sestak as a tight end in the 17th round from McNeese State University.

Sestak served as the cornerstone of a defense that took the Bills to the playoffs four straight years ( 1963 – 1966 ) and consecutive AFL championships in 1964 and 1965.

In January 1970, Sestak was selected as a member of the All-Time All-AFL Team, and in 2009 as a member of the Bills ' 50th Anniversary Team.

The general election between Toomey and U. S. Congressman Joe Sestak of Delaware County, who narrowly defeated Specter in the Democratic primary, became ugly.

McDole and his defensive linemates ( left tackle Jim Dunaway, right tackle Tom Sestak, and right end Tom Day ) held the opposition without a rushing touchdown in 17 straight games over the 1964-1965 seasons.

Sestak was a starter in his rookie year and, until a series of knee injuries ended his career after the 1967 season, used his strength to dominate the line of scrimmage.

The latter five, all former NFL players, have already been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Sestak, a star from the AFL, like many other AFL players has been ignored by the Hall of Fame selectors.

Tom Sestak died of a heart attack in 1987.

From small colleges and predominantly black colleges ( a source mainly ignored by the NFL ), the AFL signed stars such as Elbert Dubenion ( Bluffton ), Lionel Taylor ( New Mexico Highlands ), Tom Sestak ( McNeese State ), Charlie Tolar and Charlie Hennigan ( Northwestern State of Louisiana ), Abner Haynes ( North Texas State ), and a host of others.

Congressman Joe Sestak ( who had previously retired from the U. S. Navy as a vice admiral ) paid tribute to Kalas in the House of Representatives.
