Shankar was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score for his work on the 1982 movie Gandhi, but lost to John Williams ' E. T.
In June 2008, Shankar played what was billed as his last European concert, but his 2011 tour includes dates in the United Kingdom.
Shankar was awarded honorary degrees from universities in India and the United States.
In 2001, Shankar was made an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II for his " services to music ".
