SSCMS was founded in 2001 under the vision and guidance of His Holiness Ravi Shankar ( spiritual leader ), the founder of Art of Living Foundation, an educational non-governmental organization ( NGO ).

She was born Madhuri Shankar Dixit to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, of a Marathi family.

Used widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, the sitar became known in the western world through the work of Ravi Shankar beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s after The Kinks ' top 10 single " See My Friends " featured a low tuned drone guitar which was widely mistaken to be the instrument.

Shankar was born in Varanasi and spent his youth touring Europe and India with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar.

After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.

Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999, and received three Grammy Awards.

Shankar was born 7 April 1920 in Varanasi to a Bengali Brahmin family as the youngest of seven brothers.

There he married a second time while Devi raised Shankar in Varanasi, and did not meet his son until he was eight years old.

Khan was a rigorous teacher and Shankar had training on sitar and surbahar, learned ragas and the musical styles dhrupad, dhamar, and khyal, and was taught the techniques of the instruments rudra veena, rubab, and sursingar.

Shankar began to perform publicly on sitar in December 1939 and his debut performance was a jugalbandi ( duet ) with Ali Akbar Khan, who played the string instrument sarod.

During the visit, a documentary film about Shankar named Raga was shot by Howard Worth, and released in 1971.

In late 1970, the London Symphony Orchestra invited Shankar to compose a concerto with sitar ; Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra was performed with André Previn as conductor and Shankar playing the sitar.

Shankar was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score for his work on the 1982 movie Gandhi, but lost to John Williams ' E. T.

In June 2008, Shankar played what was billed as his last European concert, but his 2011 tour includes dates in the United Kingdom.

Shankar was awarded the three highest national civil honors of India: Padma Bhushan, in 1967, Padma Vibhushan, in 1981, and Bharat Ratna, in 1999.

Shankar was awarded honorary degrees from universities in India and the United States.

In 2001, Shankar was made an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II for his " services to music ".

Shankar married Allauddin Khan's daughter Annapurna Devi in 1941 and a son, Shubhendra Shankar, was born in 1942.

He trained his son and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, his daughter and surbahar player Annapurna Devi, sitarists Nikhil Banerjee and Ravi Shankar, the flautist Pannalal Ghosh, and the violinist V. G. Jog.

Himself being a trained singer ( he and Mukesh learned vocal music from the same Guru ) and having an ear for good music, Raj Kapoor thus, took on board, a completely new team of composers Shankar and Jaikishan and lyricists Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri ( a former bus conductor ).

While Ananda Shankar was a musician and music composer who trained with Dr. Lalmani Misra rather than his uncle, Ravi Shankar, and in time became known for his fusion music, encompassing both Western and Indian music styles.

A sitar can have 21, 22, or 23 strings, among them six or seven played strings which run over the frets: the Gandhaar-pancham sitar ( used by Vilayat Khan and his disciples ) has six playable strings, whereas the Kharaj-pancham sitar, used in the Maihar gharana, to which Ravi Shankar belongs, and other gharanas such as Bishnupur, has seven.

Shankar engaged Western music by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s.

Shankar had performed as part of a cultural delegation in the Soviet Union in 1954 and Menuhin invited Shankar in 1955 to perform in New York City for a demonstration of Indian classical music, sponsored by the Ford Foundation.

Shankar's association with Harrison greatly increased Shankar's popularity and Ken Hunt of Allmusic would state that Shankar had become " the most famous Indian musician on the planet " by 1966.

Shankar toured and taught for the remainder of the 1970s and the 1980s and released his second concerto, Raga Mala, conducted by Zubin Mehta, in 1981.

Anoushka performed a composition by Shankar for the 2002 Harrison memorial Concert for George and Shankar wrote a third concerto for sitar and orchestra for Anoushka and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Shankar often closes his performances with a piece inspired by the light-classical thumri genre.

The Concert for Bangladesh ( or Bangla Desh, as the country name was spelled originally ) was the name for two benefit concerts organised by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, held at noon and at 7 pm on Sunday, 1 August 1971, playing to a total of 40, 000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Shankar ’ s original hope was to raise a humble $ 25, 000 through a benefit concert of his own, compered perhaps by actor Peter Sellers.

Reputed names in the domain of Indian classical music like Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and Ram Narayan have also composed music for films.

The two popular styles are the " gayaki style " sitars ( sometimes called " Vilayat Khan style sitars ") and the full decorated " instrumental style " sitars ( sometimes called " Ravi Shankar style sitars ").

Shankar heard the lead musician for the Maihar court, Allauddin Khan, in December 1934 at a music conference in Kolkata and Uday convinced the Maharaja of Maihar in 1935 to allow Khan to become his group's soloist for a tour of Europe.

Shankar declined to attend due to problems in his marriage, but recommended Ali Akbar Khan to play instead.

Shankar heard about the positive response Khan received and resigned from AIR in 1956 to tour the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States.

Some of the most talented classical musicians of the sub-continent come from Bangladesh including Ustad Allauddin Khan, Sangeetacharya Tarapada Chakraborty, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Manas Chakraborty, Ustad Ayet Ali Khan, Ustad Abed Hossain Khan and so on.

Passion introduced many listeners to such artists as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N ' Dour, L. Shankar, and Baaba Maal.
