Sir George Cayley was one of the most important people in the history of aeronautics.

In 1799 Sir George Cayley set forth the concept of the modern airplane as a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control.

Sir George Cayley is credited as the first person to identify the four aerodynamic forces of flight — weight, lift, drag, and thrust — and the relationships between them.

Otto Lilienthal, following the work of Sir George Cayley, was the first person to become highly successful with glider flights.

Through the aegis of her scientific uncle, Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe, a chemist and vice chancellor of the University of London, she consulted with botanists at Kew Gardens, convincing George Massee of her ability to germinate spores and her theory of hybridisation.

Although he presided over a large majority, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman was overshadowed by his ministers, most notably Herbert Henry Asquith at the Exchequer, Edward Grey at the Foreign Office, Richard Burdon Haldane at the War Office and David Lloyd George at the Board of Trade.

The current Governor of the Bank of England is Sir Mervyn King, who took over on 30 June 2003 from Sir Edward George.

Among the most influential of these was the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner.

Those experts included Sir Martin Archer Shee, P. R. A., and Charles Lock Eastlake, painter and acknowledged authority on art history, soon to be first director of the National Gallery and de facto administrator of the whole Westminster decoration project.

The reply from the Queen's Private Secretary, Sir Martin Charteris, dated 17 November 1975, stated:

Herman Melville wrote a section on the narwhal in Moby Dick, in which he claims a narwhal tusk hung for " a long period " in Windsor Castle after Sir Martin Frobisher had given it to Queen Elizabeth.

Dr Badham's classical attainments were recognized by the most famous European critics, such as CG Cobet, Ludwig Preller, W Dindorf, FW Schneidewin, JAF Meineke, A Ritschl and Tischendorf ; and in Australia, Sir James Martin, William Forster and Sir William Macleay.

After the death of his father in 1562, he became a ward of Queen Elizabeth and received an excellent education in the household of her Principal Secretary, Sir William Cecil.

Imperial Germany set up a protectorate over the Sultan of Zanzibar's coastal possessions in 1885, followed by the arrival of Sir William Mackinnon's British East Africa Company ( BEAC ) in 1888, after the company had received a royal charter and concessionary rights to the Kenya coast from the Sultan of Zanzibar for a 50-year period.

Dr Login received a knighthood in 1854 from Queen Victoria and was known as Sir John Spencer Login ( he had added the ' r ' to his middle name to change it from Spence to Spencer ).

In 1885, British claims to a West African sphere of influence received international recognition ; and in the following year, the Royal Niger Company was chartered under the leadership of Sir George Taubman Goldie.

The National Museum of Australia in Canberra holds a significant collection of memorabilia relating to Robert Menzies, including a range of medals and civil awards received by Sir Robert such as his Jubilee and Coronation medals, Order of Australia, Companion of Honour and US Legion of Merit.

Twenty years after he had received a similar windfall from the Marlborough legacy, Sir William Pynsent, a Somerset baronet to whom he was personally quite unknown, left him his entire estate, worth about three thousand a year, in testimony of approval of his political career.

The Alma-Tadema grand piano was designed by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and received great public acclaim when it was exhibited in London.

Still another important chapter in the story of the Revolution was written on May 5, 1783, when General Washington received Sir Guy Carleton at the DeWint House, where they discussed the terms of the peace treaty.

The second and third manifestos, respectively An Open Letter to Sir Nicholas Serota and Remodernism, were sent to Nicholas Serota which received a brief reply: " Thank you for your open letter dated 6 March.

The General Medical Council appealed to the Court of Appeal and in October 2006 by a majority decision, with the Master of the Rolls, Sir Anthony Clarke, dissenting, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the High Court in part, ruling that Meadow's misconduct was not sufficiently serious to merit the punishment which he had received.

Noted for his distinctive voice and delivery, Scofield received an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for his performance as Sir Thomas More in the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons, a reprise of the role he played in the stage version at the West End and on Broadway for which he received a Tony Award.
