In a single sentence, parallel to Aristotle's statement asserting that being is substance, St. Thomas pushes away from the Aristotelian doctrine: " Being is not a genus, since it is not predicated univocally but only analogically.

St. Thomas chose the analogy: all beings are like, or analogous to, each other in existing.

Pointing out that predicables are predicated univocally of substances ; that is, they refer to " the same thing " found in each instance, St. Thomas argued that whatever can be said about being is not univocal, because all beings are unique, each actuated by a unique existence.

St. Thomas called them ( perhaps not originally ) the transcendentia, " transcendentals ", because they " climb above " the categories, just as being climbs above substance.

With all the greatest shrines in the Christian world to choose from, it seemed that when the local Arab Christians had a problem – an illness, or something more complicated: a husband detained in an Israeli prison camp, for example – they preferred to seek the intercession of St George in his grubby little shrine at Beit Jala rather than praying at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem or the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Then the priest blesses kolyva ( boiled wheat with honey and raisins ) which is distributed to the faithful in commemoration of the following miracle worked by St. Theodore on the First Saturday of Great Lent: Fifty years after the death of St Theodore, the emperor Julian the Apostate ( 361-363 ), as a part of his general policy of persecution of Christians, commanded the governor of Constantinople during the first week of Great Lent to sprinkle all the food provisions in the marketplaces with the blood offered to pagan idols, knowing that the people would be hungry after the strict fasting of the first week.

St Theodore appeared in a dream to Archbishop Eudoxius, ordering him to inform all the Christians that no one should buy anything at the marketplaces, but rather to eat cooked wheat with honey ( kolyva ).

The text states that St. Valentine was beaten with clubs and finally beheaded for giving aid to Christians in Rome.

Another tradition, which has remained popular among British Israelites and others, makes Caratacus already a Christian before he came to Rome, Christianity having been brought to Britain by either Joseph of Arimathea or St. Paul, and identifies a number of early Christians as his relatives.

Many Christians refused and were martyred ( possibly including the pope, St Fabian, on 20 January ), while others partook in the sacrifices in order to save their own lives.
