Schweitzer notes that St. Paul apparently believed in the immediacy of the " Second Coming of Jesus ": " Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord " ( 1 Thessalonians 4. 17 ).

St Paul spoke of the ' last times ': " Brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none " ( 1 Corinthians 7: 29 ); " God ... Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son " ( Hebrews 1: 2 ).

This belief follows the theology of St. Paul: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.

Damaged buildings included the medieval churches of St. Foillan, St. Paul and St. Nicholas, and the Rathaus ( city hall ), although Aachen Cathedral was largely unscathed.

They appeal as well to other documents of the early Church, especially the Epistle of St. Clement ( see above ).

It does not appear that St. Paul had visited this city when he wrote his Epistle to the Colossians (, ), since he tells Philemon of his hope to visit it upon being freed from prison ( see Philemon 1: 22 ).

Martin Luther, when urging the secular authorities to crush the Peasant Rebellion of 1525 in Germany in his Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants, based his argument on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans 13: 1-7.

" Similarly, the Catholic Encyclopedia says, " the subjects treated of in the Epistle are many and various ; moreover, St. James not infrequently, whilst elucidating a certain point, passes abruptly to another, and presently resumes once more his former argument.

In 1738, while hearing Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans read at St. Botolph Church on Aldersgate Street in London, John Wesley famously felt his heart " strangely warmed ", a conversion experience which is often seen as the beginning of Methodism.

On the statement about a decree requiring women to cover their heads, J. P. Kirsch comments in the Catholic Encyclopedia: " Without doubt this decree is apocryphal, and copied by the author of the Liber Pontificalis from the first Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians ( 11: 5 ) and arbitrarily attributed to the first successor of the Apostle in Rome.

St Paul repeatedly speaks of the " holy kiss ," and, in his Epistle to the Romans, writes: " Salute one another with an holy kiss " and his first Epistle to the Thessalonians ( 1 Thessalonians 5: 26 ), he says: " Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

For example, Hamlet Prince of Denmark becomes " Camelot, prince of dinmurk " and St. Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews becomes a " farced epistol to the hibruws ".

As Maxwell implies, St Paul's Epistle to the Philippians and the ancient Battle of Philippi were no doubt influential in the final form of the name.

The Council upheld salvation appropriated by grace through faith and works of that faith ( not just by faith, as the Protestants insisted ) because " faith without works is dead ", as the Epistle of St. James states ( 1 22: 26 ).

There is only one See founded on Peter by the word of the Lord ( St. Cyprian, Epistle 43 ), outside of which we cannot find either true faith or eternal salvation.

Most notably are documents entitled, " Artephius his secret Book ", followed by " The Epistle of Iohn Pontanus, wherein he beareth witness of ye book of Artephius ", these are themselves a collection of excerpts from another work entitled, " Nicholas Flammel, His Exposition of the Hieroglyphicall Figures which he caused to be painted upon an Arch in St Innocents Church-yard in Paris.

After the victory, in 534, the Temple treasure of Jerusalem, looted by the Romans in 70 AD and taken to Carthage by the Vandals after their sack of Rome in 455, was brought to Constantinople and deposited for a time, perhaps in the Church of St. Polyeuctus, before being returned to Jerusalem in either the Church of the Resurrection or the New Church.

Among the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Matthew, the message to his followers that one should " Turn the other cheek " and his example in the story Pericope Adulterae, in which Jesus intervenes in the stoning of an adulteress, are generally accepted as his condemnation of physical retaliation ( though most scholars agree that the latter passage was " certainly not part of the original text of St John's Gospel ") More militant Christians consider Romans 13: 3 – 4 to support the death penalty.

St. Paul in Romans and I Corinthians placed special emphasis on this doctrine, and stressed that belief in Jesus would allow Christians to overcome death and attain salvation in the hereafter.

Latin was the language of the ancient Romans, but it was also the lingua franca of Europe throughout the middle ages, so Latin literature includes not only Roman authors like Cicero, Vergil, Ovid and Lucretius, but also includes European writers after the fall of the Empire from religious writers like St. Augustine ( 354 – 430 AD ), to secular writers like Francis Bacon ( 1561-1626 ) and Spinoza ( 1632 – 1677 ).

St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote shortly after Clement and in his letter from the city of Smyrna to the Romans he said he would not command them as Peter and Paul did.

Both sides agree ... that Rome, as the Church that ' presides in love ' according to the phrase of St Ignatius of Antioch ( To the Romans, Prologue ), occupied the first place in the taxis, and that the bishop of Rome was therefore the protos among the patriarchs.

Its history goes back to the Roman harbour ( named " Portus Luguidonis "-presumably located in the little bay in front of the ancient church of St. John ), from where the Romans entered inner Sardinia.

Its seal shows its protector Emperor Charles IV, with his coats of arms as King of the Romans and King of Bohemia, kneeling in front of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia.

* June 29 – Henry VII, Holy Roman Emperor is crowned in the Lateran Palace due to St Peter's Basilica being occupied by Romans hostile to him.

Plutarch, on the other hand, was given to “ tendencies to stereotype, to polarize, and to exaggerate that are inherent in the propaganda surrounding his subjects .” Furthermore, because of the unlikelihood that Shakespeare would have had direct access to Plutarch ’ s Greek Lives and probably read them through a French translation from a Latin translation, his play, then, constructs Romans with an anachronistic Christian sensibility that might have been influenced by St. Augustine ’ s Confessions among others.

Barbarian is used in its Hellenic sense by St. Paul in the New Testament ( Romans 1: 14 ) to describe non-Greeks, and to describe one who merely speaks a different language ( 1 Corinthians 14: 11 ).

The Lark is thought to have been used by the Romans for the carriage of clunch, a building material quarried from pits near Isleham, and stone for the building of Bury St Edmunds Abbey was carried to the site along the river.

Bury St Edmunds ( Beodericsworth, St Edmund's Bury ), supposed by some to have been the Villa Faustina of the Romans, was one of the royal towns of the Saxons.

Cromwell based this decision on St. Paul's epistle to the Romans 10: 15.

After the Romans left there is no record of who lived there ( apart from some wounded soldiers from wars who had to live there ), until 883 when a group of monks, driven out of Lindisfarne seven years earlier, stopped there to build a wooden shrine and church to St Cuthbert, whose body they had borne with them.
