The following book is based on the series of lectures delivered for the course in moral philosophy established at the Naval War College by Admiral Stockdale in 1978, when Stockdale was president of the college.

Stockdale was born in Abingdon, Illinois and, following a brief period at Monmouth College, he entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1943.

In July 2008, a statue of him was erected at Luce Hall at the U. S. Naval Academy ; the hall also houses the Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.

The philosophy of Epictetus is well known in the American military through the writings and example of James Stockdale, an American fighter pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam, became a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, and later a vice presidential candidate.

Stockdale wrote in his 1984 book Love and War: " had the best seat in the house to watch that event, and our destroyers were just shooting at phantom targets — there were no PT boats there ...

During the following two decades, Stockdale wrote a number of books both on his experiences during the Vietnam War and afterwards.

Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners ' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt.

Sybil Stockdale was the wife of an American Vietnam War Navy pilot who became a prisoner of war.

Stockdale is also the co-author, along with her late husband, of the book " In Love and War: the Story of a Family's Ordeal and Sacrifice During the Vietnam War ".

The local primary schools include Grey Street Primary School ( formerly Traralgon Primary School ), Kosciuszko Street Primary School, Liddiard Road Primary School, Stockdale Road Primary School, St Michaels Primary School, St Gabriels Primary School, Flinders Christian Community College ( FCCC ) and St Pauls Anglican Grammar School.

The architect was Shirley Harrison ( 1876 – 1961 ) son of Stockdale Harrison, architect of Vaughan College.

Sybil Stockdale holds an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College, and a Masters Degree in education from Stanford University.

In 1979, the Stockdale family gave the ownership of the castle to the Lonach Highland Friendly Society.

Currently each member of Congress and the vice president can have five appointees attending the Naval Academy at any time.
