Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri of Seramphore in his 1894 book The Holy Science recalculated the traditional figures of the Yugas, explaining that from 1699 A. D. the world entered Dwapara Yuga, pointing to the Renaissance, growth of democracies, scientific and industrial revolutions as clear evidence for the change.

Yogananda's seeking after various saints mostly ended when he met his guru, Swami Yukteswar Giri, in 1910, at the age of 17.
Mahavatar Babaji also bestowed on Yukteswar the title of ' Swami ' at that meeting.
Some of his notable disciples included Panchanon Bhattacharya, Yukteswar Giri, Swami Pranabananda, Swami Keshabananda, Bhupendranath Sanyal, and the parents of Paramahansa Yogananda.
Yogananda, a disciple of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri who was himself a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, then brought Kriya Yoga to the United States and Europe during the 20th century.
