Taiko are categorized into two types of construction.

* Nara-Scrub Oak, used by Kawada Taiko to make their " Hi-Tech Taikos " which are constructed from staves, also used for Bachi.

* Tamo-Unknown, used by Kawada Taiko to make their " Hi-Tech Taikos " which are constructed from staves.

The first Taiko player in the UK was Joji Hirota, soon followed by the UK's first regularly performing Taiko group, Akatsuki Daiko, set up in 1993. Notable current groups are Mugenkyo, Taiko Meantime and Kagemusha Taiko

Taiko ensembles are groups that are nearly completely drum instruments, with a couple of exceptions.

The Hyoshigi, Chanpon, Surigane, Taiko, and Fue were traditionally the men's instruments but are now acceptable for women to play.

Instruments used in the daily service are the Hyoshigi, Chanpon, Surigane, Taiko, and Kazutori ( a counter, to count the 21 times the first section is repeated ).
