The top producing countries were, in order, the People's Republic of China ( excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan ), Peru, Japan, the United States, Chile, Indonesia, Russia, India, Thailand, Norway and Iceland.

Taiwan ( historically called " Formosa " especially prior to 1945, from Portuguese: Ilha Formosa, " Beautiful Island ") is an island and an archipelago in East Asia, composed of Taiwan Island and several much smaller islands such as the Penghu Islands, Orchid Island, Green Island, and Hsiao Liuchiu.

The main island of the archipelago is Taiwan Island, which comprises about 99 % of the current jurisdiction of the Republic of China ; the other 1 % consists of the smaller islands of the archipelago such as Orchid Island and the Penghu islands, along with the tiny islets-Green Island and Hsiao Liuchiu.

* July 8 – The Qing Dynasty Chinese admiral Shi Lang leads 300 ships with 20, 000 troops out of Tongshan, Fujian and sails towards the Kingdom of Tungning, in modern-day Taiwan and Penghu, in order to quell the kingdom in the name of Qing.

From then, parts of Taiwan became increasingly integrated into the Qing Dynasty before it ceded the island, along with Penghu, to the Empire of Japan in 1895, following the First Sino-Japanese War.

As part of the settlement for losing the Sino-Japanese War, The Qing empire ceded the island of Taiwan and Penghu to Japan on 17 April 1895, according to the terms of the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

The Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed on 17 April 1895, ceding Taiwan and Penghu to Japan, which would rule the island for 50 years until its defeat in World War II.

Per the provisions in Article 2 of San Francisco Peace Treaty, the Japanese formally renounced the territorial sovereignty of Taiwan and Penghu islands, and the treaty was signed in 1951 and came into force in 1952.

As of the moment when the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into force, the political status of Taiwan and Penghu Islands were still uncertain.

After four more years, 1950 saw the cessation of major military hostilities — with the newly founded People's Republic of China controlling mainland China ( including Hainan ), and the Republic of China's jurisdiction being restricted to Taiwan, Penghu, Quemoy, Matsu and several outlying islands.

After Hong Kong and Macau were reunited with mainland China under the rule of the People's Republic of China ( PRC ), the only outstanding goal for advocates of Chinese reunification is the unification of mainland China ( including Hong Kong and Macau ) and Taiwan ( including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu Islands ).

As a consequence of the World War II and the Chinese Civil War, however, the ROC lost control of mainland China to the Chinese communist party which founded the People's Republic of China ( PRC ) while gaining and maintaining control of Taiwan island, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu and other islands.
