As of 2009, more CPUs are produced using the ARM architecture instruction set than any other 32-bit instruction set.

These architectures range from the Intel / AMD 32-bit / 64-bit architectures commonly found in personal computers to the ARM architecture commonly found in embedded systems and the IBM eServer zSeries mainframes.

In cellphone / PDA applications, MIPS has been largely unable to displace the incumbent, competing ARM architecture.

In the 21st century, the use of ARM architecture processors in smart phones and tablet computers such as the iPad and Android tablets provided a wide user base for RISC-based systems.

* The ARM architecture dominates the market for low power and low cost embedded systems ( typically 100 – 1200 MHz in 2011 ).

The StrongARM is a family of computer microprocessors developed by Digital Equipment Corporation and manufactured in the late 1990s which implemented the ARM v4 instruction set architecture.

Mainframe-unique technologies that aid concurrent batch and online processing include Job Control Language ( JCL ), scripting languages such as REXX, Job Entry Subsystem ( JES2 and JES3 ), Workload Manager ( WLM ), Automatic Restart Manager ( ARM ), Resource Recovery Services ( RRS ), DB2 data sharing, Parallel Sysplex, unique performance optimizations such as HiperDispatch, I / O channel architecture, and several others.

RISC processors using 32-bit instructions are usually 3-operand machines, such as processors implementing the Power Architecture, the SPARC architecture, the MIPS architecture, the ARM architecture, and the AVR32 architecture.

All registers are accessed through standard ARM architecture coprocessor mapping mechanism.

This modification is widespread in modern processors such as the ARM architecture and X86 processors.

Examples include, the AVR by Atmel Corp, the PIC by Microchip Technology, Inc. and the ARM Cortex-M3 processor ( not all ARM chips have Harvard architecture ).

ARM ( formerly Advanced RISC Machine and Acorn RISC Machine ) is a reduced instruction set computer ( RISC ) instruction set architecture ( ISA ) developed by British company ARM Holdings.

The ARM architecture is the most widely used 32-bit instruction set architecture in numbers produced.

The ARM architecture is licensable.

However, there are notable exceptions in the Gil the ARM stories ; and Jigsaw Man first appeared in Harlan Ellison's landmark " new wave " anthology, Dangerous Visions.

Several experimental kernels were developed during that time, including Hazelnut, the first L4 kernel that was ported ( as opposed to re-implemented ) to a different architecture ( from x86 to ARM ).

Companies often license these designs from ARM to manufacture and integrate into their own system on a chip ( SoC ) with other components like RAM, GPUs, or radio basebands ( for mobile phones ).

In 2011, HiSilicon Technologies Co. Ltd. licensed a variety of ARM technology to be used in communications chip designs.

Its main CPU was an ARM Integrated ( ARMI ) compatible chip ( ARM4T architecture ) running at 104 MHz, the same as the Nokia 7650 and 3650 phones.

( Peripherals and memory comprise the bulk of SoC designs ; ARM cores don't take up much chip area.

In a strange twist of fate, while Apple dropped the chip in favor of ARM, the Active Book Company ( founded by Hermann Hauser, who also founded Acorn ) dropped the ARM in its PDA to use Hobbit.

The main CPU in this smartphone is an ARM compatible chip ( OMAP 1710 ( ARMv5 architecture, Arm9 core )) running at 220 MHz, an unprecedented speed for a smartphone at its release.

In late 2005, work began on a port of Rockbox to Apple's iPod portable players based on CPUs from ARM Ltd. incorporated into systems on a chip sold by portal player.

A typical top-down documentation tree is: high-level marketing slides, datasheet for the exact physical chip, a detailed reference manual that describes common peripherals and other aspects of physical chips within the same series, reference manual for the exact ARM core processor within the chip, reference manual for the ARM architecture of the core which includes detailed description of all instruction sets.

For embedded systems, this is still a concern ; ARM, MIPS and Power Architecture have all added 16-bit instructions to their architectures, which were originally 32-bit only.
