Of these the most noteworthy is Loccum Abbey in Hanover, founded as a Cistercian house in 1163 by Count Wilbrand of Hallermund, and reformed in 1593.

The area around Abensberg is characterized by the narrow valley of the Danube, where the Weltenburg Abbey stands, the valley of the Altmühl in the north, a left tributary of the Danube, and the famous Hallertau hops-planting region in the south.

* 1661 – King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland is crowned in Westminster Abbey.

* 1100 – Henry I is crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey.

* 1951 – The Stone of Scone, the stone upon which Scottish monarchs were traditionally crowned, is found on the site of the altar of Arbroath Abbey.

The Abbey is cared for by Historic Scotland and is open to the public throughout the year ( entrance charge ).

The Abbey, which was the richest in Scotland, is most famous for its association with the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath, believed to have been drafted by Abbot Bernard, who was the Chancellor of Scotland under King Robert I.

MSP Alex Johnstone wrote " Clearly, the Declaration of Arbroath is a literary work of outstanding universal significance by any stretch of the imagination " In 2008, the Campaign Group Chairman, Councillor Jim Millar launched a public petition to reinforce the bid explaining " We're simply asking people to, local people especially, to sign up to the campaign to have the Declaration of Arbroath and Arbroath Abbey recognised by the United Nations.

Little remains of the claustral buildings of the Abbey except for the impressive gatehouse, which stretches between the south-west corner of the church and a defensive tower on the High Street, and the still complete Abbot's House, a building of the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, which is the best-preserved of its type in Scotland.

Just outside the city is San Daniele Abbey ( 11th century ).

6 km from the city is also Praglia Abbey, founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks and rebuilt in 1496-1550.

It is on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, looking south to the island of Inchcolm and its Abbey, and to Leith and Edinburgh beyond.

These draw many visitors in summer, along with the remains of the historic Abbey, and is a popular setting for weddings.

Since the donation of the Abbey Moutier-Grandvalto and all its possessions to Bishop Adalbero II in 999 till the Reformation, Basel was ruled by prince-bishops ( see Bishop of Basel, whose memory is preserved in the crosier shown on the Basel coat-of-arms – see above ).

It is named after the village of Mayo, which is now generally known as Mayo Abbey.

Curling is thought to have been invented in medieval Scotland, with the first written reference to a contest using stones on ice coming from the records of Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, in February 1541.

In 1215 he is recorded as abbot of Łekno Abbey near Gniezno in Greater Poland, most but not all authors identify him with Godfrey of Łękno.

He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

With the notable exception of Dunfermline Abbey he is not definitely associated with major religious establishments or ecclesiastical reforms.

Its first mention in historical documents in 814 AD suggests there was a church here in the 9th century, most likely built by monks who were associated with the nearby Abbey of Sant ' Antimo.

* The Abbey of Kells, with its round tower, is associated with St Colmcille ( also known as Columba ), the Book of Kells, now kept at Trinity College Dublin and the Kells Crozier, exhibited at the British Museum.

Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester ( 12 March 1718 – 1798 ) was a wealthy landowner particularly associated with the reshaping of Milton Abbey and the creation of the village of Milton Abbas in Dorset, south-west England.

The University is associated with the Holy Name Monastery, a Benedictine convent, and Saint Leo Abbey, a Benedictine monastery.

The estate record of the Stanhopes is regarded as one of the most extensive and important collections of its kind, complementing the extensive mediaeval record associated with Kirkstall Abbey.
