The Africa Alphabet ( also International African Alphabet or IAI alphabet ) was developed in 1928 under the lead of Diedrich Westermann.
In 1928, the IAI ( then IIALC ) published an " Africa Alphabet " to facilitate standardization of Latin-based writing systems for African languages.
More recently, western linguists have also tended to prefer the Latin script or the International Phonetic Alphabet ( itself largely based on Latin script ) when transcribing or creating written standards for non-European languages, such as the African reference alphabet.
The Standard Alphabet by Lepsius is a Latin alphabet developed by Karl Richard Lepsius, who initially used it to transcribe Egyptian hieroglyphs and extended it to write African languages or transcribe other languages, published in 1854 and 1855, and in a revised edition ( with many languages added ) in 1863, it was comprehensive but it was not used much as it contains a lot of diacritic marks and therefore was difficult to read, write and typeset at that time.
During the 1980s, Alphabet City was home to a mix of Puerto Rican and African American families living alongside struggling artists and musicians ( who were mostly young and white ).
The African Reference Alphabet is clearly related to the Africa Alphabet and reflected practice based on the latter.
Its lowercase form is similar to an italic long s < span style =" font-family: serif ;">&# x17F ;&# x202f ;</ span > or an integral sign ; in 1928 the Africa Alphabet borrowed the Greek letter sigma for the uppercase form, but more recently the African reference alphabet discontinued it, using the lowercase esh only.
It is today used in the International Phonetic Alphabet, as well as in the alphabets of some African languages.
Both glyphs of the majuscule and minuscule forms of this letter are based on the rotated form of a minuscule e ; a similar letter with identical minuscule is used in the Pan-Nigerian Alphabet and some alphabets based on the African reference alphabet, but has the capital form majuscule, based on a horizontally flipped majuscule E.
It is used to represent a voiced velar fricative, both in the International Phonetic Alphabet, and in the alphabets of African languages such as Dagbani, Dinka, Kabiyé, and Ewe, and sometimes in the romanization of Pashto.
A unicase version of the Latin alphabet was proposed by Michael Mann and David Dalby in 1982 as a variation of the Niamey African Reference Alphabet.
