The Albula Alps are a mountain range in the Alps of eastern Switzerland.

The Albula Alps are separated from the Oberhalbstein Alps in the west by the Septimer Pass and the Julia valley ; from the Plessur Alps in the north-west by the Landwasser valley ; from the Silvretta group in the north-east by the Flüela Pass ; from the Bernina Alps in the south-east by the Maloja Pass and the Inn valley ( upper Engadin ).

Among these groups are the Dauphine Alps, the Eastern and Western Graians, the entire Bernese Alps, the Tödi, Albula and Silvretta groups, the Ortler and Adamello ranges, and the Dolomites of South Tyrol, as well as the lower Alps of Vorarlberg, Bavaria and Salzburg.

The Bernina Range is separated from the Albula Range in the north-west by the Maloja Pass and the Upper Engadin valley ; from the Livigno Range in the east by the Bernina Pass ; from the Bergamo Alps in the south by the Adda valley ( Valtellina ); and from the Bregaglia Range in the south-west by the Muretto Pass.

The Livigno Alps are separated from the Bernina Range in the south-west by the Bernina Pass ; from the Albula Alps in the north-west by the Upper Engadin valley ; from the Sesvenna Range in the north-east by the Ofen Pass and Val Müstair ; from the Ortler Alps in the east by the upper Adda River valley ( Valtellina ) and the Stelvio Pass.

The Sesvenna Range is separated from the Silvretta Group in the north and the Albula Range in the west by the Lower Engadin valley ; from the Livigno Range in the south-west by the Ofen Pass and Val Müstair ; from the Ötztal Alps in the east by the upper Adige valley and the Reschen Pass.

The Oberhalbstein Alps are separated from the Lepontine Alps in the west by the Splügen Pass ; from the Plessur Range in the north by the Albula river valley ; from the Albula Alps in the east by the Septimer Pass and the Julia River ; from the Bernina Range in the south by the Val Bregaglia.

They are named after the River Albula.

Three World Heritage Sites are located in the canton: the Benedictine Convent of Saint John, the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona and the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula and Bernina Landscapes.

These are: Simplon, in Canton of Valais ; Bosco Gurin, in Canton of Ticino ; and the following communities in Graubünden ( Grisons ): Obersaxen ; Valsertal ( Vals, St. Martin ); Safiental ( Valendas, Versam, Tenna, Safien ); Rheinwald ( Medels, Nufenen, Splügen, Sufers, Hinterrhein, Avers ); Schanfigg ( Arosa, Langwies ); Albula ( Mutten, Schmitten, Wiesen ); Landquart ( Davos, Klosters, Furna, Says, St. Antönien, Valzeina ).

The Plessur Alps are separated from the Glarus Alps in the west by the Rhine valley ; from the Rätikon range in the north by the Landquart river valley ( Prättigau ); from the Albula Alps in the south-east by the Landwasser River valley ; from the Oberhalbstein Alps in the south by the Albula river valley.

This had the effect of diverting the rivers ' flow toward the " Albula river " ( Tiber river ).

The legendary king Tiberinus Silvius, or Thebris, ninth in the king-list of Alba Longa, was said to have drowned in the Albula River, which was subsequently renamed in his honour.

The only tradition specifically attached to Tiberinus is that he was drowned while crossing the river then known as the Albula, but which was ever after known to the Latins as the Tiber.

Many of the mountain ranges feature extensive glaciers, such as at the Adula, the Albula, the Silvretta, the Bernina, the Bregaglia and the Rätikon ranges.

The Albula Line became a UNESCO world heritage as did the Bernina Railway, the highest and only railway to cross the alps without the use of a tunnel at the pass.

Cunter ( Romansh, in German: Conters im Oberhalbstein ) is a municipality in the district of Albula in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

The municipality is located in the Surses sub-district of the Albula district.

In the Upper Engadin there is a train from Samedan that connects via Albula tunnel with the rest of Switzerland.

In the summer, Albula Pass is also open for car travel.

In 2008 the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes ( the part from Thusis to Tirano, including St. Moritz ) was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The bonefish ( Albula vulpes ) is the type species of the Albulidae family, or bonefishes in order Albuliformes.

An alp refers to a high mountain pasture where cows are taken to be grazed during the summer months and where hay barns can be found, and the term " the Alps ", referring to the mountains, is a misnomer.

At present the Alps are one of the more popular tourist destinations in the world with many resorts such Oberstdorf, in Bavaria, Saalbach in Austria, Davos in Switzerland, Chamonix in France, and Cortina d ' Ampezzo in Italy recording more than a million annual visitors.

Other villages in the Alps are considering becoming car free zones or limiting the number of cars for reasons of sustainability of the fragile Alpine terrain.

The lower regions and larger towns of the Alps are well-served by motorways and main roads, but higher mountain passes and byroads can be treacherous even in summer.

The lake absorbs huge amounts of eroded gravel and snowmelt that the river brings from the Alps, and the former swamps have become fruitful plains: they are known as the " vegetable garden of Switzerland ".

Hungary has three major geographic regions ( which are subdivided to seven smaller ones ): the Great Alföld, lying east of the Danube River ; the Transdanubia, a hilly region lying west of the Danube and extending to the Austrian foothills of the Alps ; and the North Hungarian Mountains, which is a mountainous and hilly country beyond the northern boundary of the Great Hungarian Plain.

The most densely populated areas are the Po Valley ( that accounts for almost a half of the national population ) and the metropolitan areas of Rome and Naples, while vast regions such as the Alps and Appennines highlands, the plateaus of Basilicata and the island of Sardinia are very sparsely populated.

Central Japan is marked by the convergence of the three mountain chains — the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi mountains — that form the Japanese Alps ( Nihon Arupusu ), several of whose peaks are higher than 3, 000 meters.

An ancient glacial lake that formed in the Great Lakes region of North America, Lake Agassiz, is named after him, as are Mount Agassiz in California's Palisades, Mount Agassiz, in the Uinta Mountains, Agassiz Peak in Arizona and in his native Switzerland, the Agassizhorn in the Bernese Alps.

The Pyrenees are older than the Alps: their sediments were first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras.

Mineral springs are abundant and remarkable, and especially noteworthy are the hot springs, of which the Alps are very deficient.

The glaciers are confined to the northern slopes of the central Pyrenees, and do not descend, like those of the Alps, far down into the valleys, but have their greatest lengths along the direction of the mountain chain.

The Pyrenees are relatively as rich in endemic species as the Alps, and among the most remarkable instances of that endemism is the occurrence of the monotypic genus Xatardia ( family Apiaceae ), only on a high alpine pass between the Val d ' Eynes and Catalonia.

Romania's Carpathians are differentiated into three ranges: the Eastern Carpathians, the Southern Carpathians or Transylvanian Alps, and the Western Carpathians.

Slate is an ideal, and durable material, while in the Swiss Alps roofs are made from huge slabs of stone, several inches thick.

Kew's collection of Alpine plants ( defined as those that grow above the tree-line in their locale-ground level at the poles rising to over 2000 metres in the Alps ), extends to over 7000 and as the Alpine house can only house around 200 at a time the ones on show are regularly rotated.

Transversals through the Alps were made possible with the use of hidden circular tunnels, which are called Spiral.

Their skiing resorts are becoming a budget alternative to the Alps.
